Adopted 2 year old dog, changing it's name? Updated, pic pg 2!

My dog was Cheeka and about 3 years old. We called her Kallie and never had an issue.

I adopted a bonded pair last year that were OGU. Their names are SO similar to each other that I really wanted to change them. Confused the heck out of us at first. But they sure could tell the difference - it really surprised me. So we didn't change their names. But I did rescue a little guy 11 years ago that was about 2 and he probably had a previous name that we never knew. He adapted quickly.

All three are on my lap as I type this. Happiness is... a lap full of love!

We have 2 puggles. The male was named Brewster and we changed it to Brady. The female was named Mocha and we went with Bella. Neither one seemed to respond to their original names when we first got them anyway so changing their names was no problem. We said their names a lot at first and they quickly answered to their new names. I guess it really is all in the tone of voice. Hope they enjoy their new dog. I would be lost without mine!

I make up a new stupid nickname for my dog all the time and he's fared well. Actually now he just responds to "dog" too haha. I don't think you'll have any issues changing the name...
:lmao:

Mine is called Dumbo too! Also responds to dumb@$$
:rotfl2: :rotfl: Thats the funniest thing! :lmao:

I agree with the others. Its in the tone. My dog is named Yogi, but he responds to Billy (as in billy goat, cause he resembled one lol), Yogurt, Puppy, Dumbo, a whole slew of names! They should have no problems with the dog responding.

BTW FWIW, I like Gizzy way better than Bella.

I adopted a stray
No idea what his name was
Once washed-and all matted hair removed he was beautiful
New name

Our lab was between 5 & 7 years old when we adopted her, and were able to change her name from Hannah to Honey by slowing going from calling her "Hannah" to "Hannah Honey" to "Honey".

We've changed the name of every dog we've ever adopted with no issues. Cats, too. :)

I, at times, have called my dogs every name in the book other than their own. They seemed to find enjoyment in my frustration.

They know, they know...

They will associate the new name with treats, security, daily food, and love. It won't be a problem.

When we adopted our dog at approx 1yr old he didn't come to them with a name so they named him scribbles. When we brought him home we named him Krieger and now he either goes by that, or Kre-Kre or my favorite "Big Handsome". He'll pretty much answer to anything, and it took only a few days for him to catch onto his new name when we brought him home.

Awww. So cute! She looks similar to my Bella except mine has floppy ears and a lighter muzzle. Your son looks like he's in love.

Dog is cute - love the ears!!! (Also love your son's Star Wars shirt lol).

We have also always changed our dogs' names when we adopted them - no problem. My one dog has about a million nickname variations on his name, some that have evolved so far away from his original name we forget how we got there; but its ok he's cool with all of them lol.

My little handful backup dog is named Daisy, and gets called "Crazy Daisy" so often she responds to the word crazy all on its own too. For example, we can be in the room discussing something totally unrelated, such as "Wow the plot of that movie was just so crazy." And then we here the thump thump thump of her tail hitting the floor as she looks up at us quizzically. Then we have to be like "No, no, not talking about you, go back to sleep" lol.

Love dogs so much!!! They will adapt to whatever name you give them. Just give them a lot of love.

When my sister adopted a former stray from a dog rescue, the rescue group had named it Lady (it is some kind of spaniel). DSis changed her name to Molly. The dog already responded to Lady, so we called her Lady Molly (well, she is treated like royalty . . . ) and eventually dropped the Lady (and not because we caught her in a compromising position with a stuffed animal, which we did many times).

Thats one cute Chug! We've got 2 Pugs, if she's taken more of the pug traits you'll have a very friendly doggie in the family :)

Our dog was a year and a half when we adopted him. His name was Festus. Yep.

His name is no longer Festus. He didn't have any issues with the name change. In fact, I think he was secretly relieved.
