Adenoid/tonsil removal for DS(3yo) advice?

I think it depends on the child , I had one ds have it done at 4 yrs old and did great he was very small at birth 4lbs and 15 ozs and had asthma , so he stayed overnight and woke up and ate Mcdonalds,( One was i the hospital. and dr okay it.) . My other ds was 21 months and had to stay in the hospital for five days because he refuse to take liquids and even came home with an iv needle in his arm and had to go back for two days until he was takin enough liquids in. But i says that,he was just so young , is why he had problems.

Hi--I'm a peds nurse in the hospital and frequently care for children in just your situation. I know to me this is routine, but I also understand that to you and others like you it is HUGE. I'm confident your nurses will know that too. I agree with what others have said that pain meds are key. I will tell you that the ones they often prescribe after a T&A are very nasty tasting. But, they are so important and will make all the difference in the world. Make your child take them, no matter how much he fights, just make that non-negotiable. If he takes the meds he will drink and thus get better very quickly. I will also tell you that 2,3, and 4 year-olds do really, really well after this surgery. There is not as much blood supply to the tonsils and this is a really good age to get it done. (I have a ds8 that will need it done very likely in the next year or 2 and he's getting kind of old :guilty: ). Also, make sure that you're comfortable so that you can be positive and a support for him. Typically with T&A's they put in the IV after they give a child some gas so they don't even feel any pokes. And, you should be with him until he falls asleep and before he wakes up (that's how it works by us). So, just reassure him that you will be with him. And, kids are really good at knowing what they can eat or drink. If it sounds good to him it is probably ok, so stock up on his favorites.

Hope things go well

Hi when my son was 3 and had surgery they didn't start the IV until he was asleep but we could not go back with him. We had to stop at the Double doors.
The Anesthesiologist was very nice though and carried my little guy in his arms like he was just taking him back to see something saying see you in a bit Mom and Dad it was very non-frightening and my son was not even a little upset. He wouldn't take the pain med either looked at the discharge nurse and said "I'd rather have the pain" Never did take anything during recovery.

Milk products do increase mucus production. Don't forget good old chicken noodle soup after a little bit-but not too hot.
