Refresh my memory... when you book a room only, your deposit is one night at the hotel vs. $250 for a package.

If I do room only, can I later call and add tickets to make a package and just pay extra to make up the deposit, or will I need to pay for the tickets in full?

I think you can add the tickets to make a package, but the issue you may have is that there is now a "paid in full" deadline to meet (like 30-45 days out, I think).

I think it would be better to purchase the tickets at about 65 days out, so that you have time to make FP+s.

Agree with above. If you add tickets. It basically becomes a package. And total is due day 45 days out. Not sure exactly. But I recommend always getting the package for fast pass selections 60 days out.

We have lots of time, thankfully, as our stay isn't until September

You can purchase tickets direct from Disney without making it a package. In this scenario you would need to pay in full at the time tickets are purchased. New date-based tickets are valid for length associated with number of days booked, regardless of your room reservation. The Room Only resort reservation remains as-is (due at check-in). You will “own” the tickets even if you cancel the room; value can be applied towards future tickets if necessary.

Or, you can add tickets to the room reservation, creating a package with $200 deposit and full amount due 30 days prior to arrival. Tickets can be adjusted within the package (adding days, hopper, etc.). The new date-based tickets will be good for length-of-stay. If you need to cancel prior to 30 days, both room and tickets are canceled. However one key aspect is the Room-Only is essentially cancelled and you’ll be rebooked as a package, the funds may not transfer (requiring a refund of original room deposit) and you might lose any discount rate; but you may be eligible for a package discount or offer.

Enjoy your vacation!

OP, this is the best/most accurate info you've received on this thread, FWIW. :-)

This is spot on.

The only thing I would add to this is that you can get tickets at a discount from an authorized seller, as opposed to full price at Disney. Disney room+ticket package will work out the same (or within a few dollars) of room only + buying tickets directly from Disney. So, there are pros and cons to doing it as a package vs. room-only and separate tickets.

Also, if you cancel a package less than 30 days out, you get a partial refund, based on how many days out. I forget the actual amount, but if you do a mock package booking, and click on terms and conditions, it's spelled out pretty plainly.
