Adding someone to your room

We have a cruise booked for 2020. We have 2 rooms and there are 4 of us, currently 2 in each room. DH and DS16 in one and myself and DS14 in the other. They are cat 4s with murphy beds, so plenty of room for us. We booked this cruise using a placeholder booked on the last cruise the 4 of us took.

Recently, my sister has lost her husband and is thinking of joining us. It's just her, no kids. Like I said, plenty of room but it will mean juggling DS14 into DH's room and I would share with my sister.

First, would she get her fare (which would be added on to our room) at the 10% discount or would she have to pay the full fare? This is her first cruise. I know if she wanted her own room, she'd be paying full fare.

And just to head off a possibility, my dad's not well and who knows what 2020 will bring for him and my mom. Should I book my mom into my room just in case the worst happens and my dad's gone and she's able to go? It's a totally outside chance, as she's never expressed that wish, but if my sister's there, she might want to go. Then again, she'll be 81 by then.

There's also the possibility of booking the room next door "just in case" for the two of them. What would be the repercussions, if any of doing that and then having to let it go and move my sister into my room, should my mom not want to go? And how would that affect her fare?

Full disclosure, the cruise price is the same as it was on opening day a month ago, so I'm not (yet) panicking.

I would book what you think is the most likely scenario, it is easier to drop a person later than add one.

I believe as you are adding your sister into a room that already has a 10% discount, that would apply to her also.

I think so, also. BUT, she would be getting her price reduction on the prevailing price for her, not the price it was on the day the original booking was made.

So far, it happens those are the same prices, still.

Also, if I booked her into my room and then she wanted her own room, I know she'd lose the 10% discount, but it wouldn't be the prevailing rates at the time of that move, right? Once she's on the psgr list, those are the prices, right? And if she changes her mind, I just move DS14 back into my room, no harm, right?

Also how do they seat 5 at a table if you want/request a private table?

I think you are correct about the cabin and prices.

You would just be seated at a 6-top with one open seat.

I think if you later add a room, it will be at the prevailing price, not the price the original room was booked at, even if the new room is just moving someone. Because that is a new booking.

Also, the number of spaces on the lifeboats could be a factor. If the cruise sells out, they may not allow you to add someone to your room because they don't have a lifeboat space for them. Very unlikely to happen, but it could. It's not about the number of cabins available, its the number of actual people.

That's a good point. I was thinking that if she was on our room, it would just be moving someone, but, yeah, that would be a new reservation. Hmm.

Well, since OP said they are already in 2 rooms, that's the max they can get the onboard booking perks for. A 3rd room, at best, might only get the OBC, and no discount on cost.

True, but I was thinking that a third room at 'full price' would still be the price when that person was added to the ship, even though it's not the 10% off. But Dug720's point was that, since it's a new room being booked, it might not be just a move, but a new reservation, and so be at the prevailing rate when the move took place.

You think there's a chance there might be some OBC from it? She wasn't on the original sailing and OBB list, which is why I wondered if she even qualified for the 10% off her fare in one of the 2 OBB rooms.

If another room is booked, it would be at the prevailing price. As would the 3rd person addition to an existing reservation

you said that right now the prices are still the same as when they originally booked, so there's not a problem there (unless, of course, it goes up before you actually add the 3rd person).

I've been corrected several times that, while any onboard reservations that exceed the 2 max won't get the onboard booking perks, some people, who've booked 3 rooms, have gotten the OBC on for the third room, just no 10% discount or reduced deposit.

That said, I'm not sure that adding a 3rd room after the fact would count as part of the "must be booked onboard" even though there are 2 rooms already booked that way.

OP already has the OBBs and using those for the 1st 2 rooms. Booking a 3rd room now would not get any OBB benefit, including no OBC.

If some is on a cruise and booking a future cruise, they can book 2 rooms with full OBB benefits and any additional booked at that time will receive OBC only. But must be booked while still onboard a cruise.

Yes, what PrincessShmoo and lanejudy are saying is what I expect about the OBC. This would be a third room after the fact.

At very least, though, if I put my sister in my room (one of the two using my placeholder), even though she was not listed on the placeholder at time of our last sailing, she would still get the 10% discount, right? It's only if she decides to move to a third room that the full price would then need to be paid, as she would no longer be under the 'umbrella' of the placeholder.

I don't think your sister would get the 10% discount because she was not a listed person when you booked. Maybe it has changed, but at one point I had booked a room for my family of 4, then dropped my husband from the reservation when I thought he wouldn't go, then when I went to re-add him they charged him full fare at the time of the "re-booking". That was a while ago, and I ended changing it one more time (dropping him). Maybe they have changed how they do things...

That's the question, for sure. Well, tomorrow, I will call and have her added, so that will answer my question. I don't suppose it matters if I move my son to the other room right now or not, does it? I just don't want her to bail on me (doubt she would, but things happen in a year and a half) and now I have to move him back. I want this to be a smooth as possible.

I wouldn't officially move your son to the other reservation. He can sleep in the other room once you are onboard.

Enjoy your cruise!
I was thinking that, but my son is a very black and white thinker and I (over)worry that he'll be upset about a blank key or two keys. For now, I've left him in my room, so if something goes awry, I'm not messing with it.

Okay, so I did phone today and added my sister. She's never been on a cruise and was not part of my placeholder list of people, however, since she is going into my room, she was given the same 10% off that the rest of us got. There was no issue on that front. They also said it wasn't a big deal to move my son over to the other room, but for now (the cruise in 2020), I'm leaving him in our room.

Now, I just have to figure out how I want to 'bill' my sister. I figured 5 of us going, so total divided by 5, but I don't know the best way for her to pay her share of the cost. I don't mind handling all the charges, but I'm pretty sure she has a points credit card with no FX fee that she might want to use for her share. I'll have to figure that out.
