Adding points for a vacation

We are still doing research and trying to figure out if DVC is best for us. We will need a 1 BR when we go (family of 5). What if someone else wants to go with us. So we need a 2br. How much extra does it cost to add on those points (so the people that came with us would pay that amount). Does that make since?

You can buy up to 24 one time use points per year through DVC. They are $15 per point. If that's not enough to cover the difference between the amount of points you have available and the number of points needed to get a 2 bedroom, you'd have to borrow from your next year. You could also look in to having points transferred to you from another DVC member. You're allowed one transfer in or out of your account per year. You also need to know that if you do choose to purchase the one time use points, you would have to wait until the 7 month mark to make the reservation. Also, if you do book at your home resort at the 11 month mark and borrow, the borrowed points would remain in the UY you borrowed in to. I hope that makes sense.

I'm somewhat new to all of this, so hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I have made some reservations and had points transferred in to my DVC account, so I am familiar with both of those things.

Hope this helps to answer your questions.:goodvibes

When you buy DVC, you will buy a set number of points to use each year and can use those points in anyway you wish. As long as you have the points available, you can book any size room you want.

You also have the ability to bank and borrow points so you could have up to 3 years worth of points to use. Of course, this would mean that you would be skipping years as well.

So, if you want to bring friends one year and want to book a 2 bedroom, you would either need to borrow points from your next UY to complete the reservation, or, as mentioned, if you are at the 7 month mark and out of current UY points, pay $15/pt for up to 24 one time use points.

Another option is to book as many nights in the 2 bedroom that you can on points and then book the remaining nights on cash with DVC at a 25% discount through MS, but rooms are not always available this way and certain room types are never available for cash.

Or you could let the people joining you on the trip make their own reservation and request to be close.

We've come to learn that we enjoy taking some trips on our own, and enjoy sharing other vacations with family and close friends. Over the years, we've added two add-on contracts to increase the number of DVC points we have. This is because we've slowly been progressing to more trips that include family/friends.

If you know you'll be doing this on a regular basis, calculate the number of points you'd need for that occassional 2nd bedroom (using your banking and borrowing), and purchase that number of points.

If it's going to be an every-once-in-a-while thing, some of the other suggestions already provided (renting points, purchasing one-time-use-points, skipping a year or reducing the number of nights on vacations in the preceeding or following year, purchasing cash nights, etc.) are all excellent ways to get enough points to get the occassional larger villa.

If you don't have the points available, and you friends are willing to pay you cash (if you did have the points) you could always rent points from someone for them. There are sites like Davids rentals. You might be able to have them set up the same resort points at be able to book in advance of the 7 month window to get the availability you want. Your friends will be paying it, and it is much easier for you to have David's rentals do the searching and organizing the points for you than trying to search the rental boards for something to match up. Maybe then they can transfer the points into your account so you make the reservation? Not sure if they can do that, but it's a thought.
