Are they still allowing you to add a person when checking in on your phone? I know Disneyland is still allowing this as I have been there a few times recently and I know it was the option in January of this year but want to make sure it still. My friend might want to join us for dinner one night but not sure yet.

Sometimes yes.
results from a couple of weeks ago - Ohana yes, Brown Derby no (but we asked and that worked), Skipper Canteen yes, Via Napoli yes but couldn't check in on phone, we asked and we were put at the big table in the middle, Oga's no.

It will depend on how busy and crowded the restaurant is at that time. Sometimes MDE allows people to add one, sometimes it doesn't. It would be better to change your ADR to add your friend to the number of guests. If they don't come, there's no penalty for showing up with fewer people than the ADR is for, as long as at least one person shows up. But if you don't add your friend to the ADR, and your friend does come, and the restaurant says they cannot add them, what are you going to do?

You can ask, but many times the answer is no. If the restaurant is very busy or you are there at a busy time of year or busy time of day,I wouldn't count on it.
If you are adding one and it doesn't change the table, probably no issue (going from 3 to 4 or 5 to 6 is easier than 4 to 5). Try and change online, call the restaurant.

We may have the opposite problem. We are booking reservations for 5 at several restaurants during the 1st week of January. Might end up being 4 at all of them. Anyone had issues with that?

You've always had the option to ask.
If they can accommodate they will.
If it doesn't change the table configuration its usually a go unless they would have too many people in the building.

No, as long as one person shows up its not an issue. When you check in, you might tell them you only have 4 as that will free up a larger table.
