Quick question...We currently own 160 at BLT. We were thinking of adding on at another resort, such as the Boardwalk or SSR. Can I buy from DVC directly for those 2? We are only looking at 50-100 points. If so, how much should I expect to pay?
Is it better to go resale for those 2?

Yes you can. BWV is $115/pt direct. There are no discounts or incentives. It is possible you might have to go on a waitlist for those points depending on that DVC has in their inventory.

SSR is a current resort so it will have some discounts. Base price is $112/pt and then the discount will depend on how many points you purchase. It looks like the discount most likely will be $10 off/pt for 50 pts or $12 off/pt for 100 points. Also, at 100 points you could elect to not have the cash discount and instead take the cruise incentive.

Resale are much cheaper...what is the point of buying from Disney direct then? :confused3

BLT is about the same right now.

you get your points faster. you don't have to wait and see if you pass ROFR.

for some people the price difference is no big deal.

(i agree with you, though.)

Usual reasons are not being able to find the contract you want. Small contracts can sell more quickly in resale or you may have trouble finding your UY. Or, the resale contracts might be stripped where as from DVC you could get current points. Resale also has closing costs added on that will increase the price/pt - although that can be negotiable. Sometimes people need the points immediately and don't have time to wait to find the perfect resale contract.

Overall though I suggest looking at resale and seeing if you can find something that works for you.

The process is faster, financing is easy through Disney, and folks seem to enjoy the feeling that they get buying from the Mouse.

IMHO another major reason is that people don't know that they can buy resale and they don't want to take the time to read or learn.

We bought our initial contract from Disney as I had not yet learned about these boards. We bought our second contract directly from disney as we wanted to be founding members at AKV. We just added on again and went resale, and saved $26 per point over Disney's price. We still saved $$ even not getting the free 4 night cruise.

We lovedsaving the extra $$ but the only problem was trying to find the amount of points with the right use year. It took four months to find what I was looking for. Well no, DH changed my criteria, so I spent three months looking for a 100 point contract then he said, what about a 150 pt contract. We used dvcresales and had great luck with ****. It took from start to finish appx five weeks. If you have the time and endurance, go resale.

Speed and convenience. I make one phone call in the morning, and the points will be in my account ready to use by the end of the day - no waiting 6-8 weeks. Also, if you time it right (by adding on immediately before your Use Year starts), you get last years points for free (you don't have to pay MF) and DVC lets you bank them.

Everyone has to weigh the pros and cons of buying direct versus resale, and make the decision that's right for them. There is no blanket right or wrong decision.

So if my use year is March and I add on in Feb I would avoid MF?

Thanks,

While on the subject of "Add-On's", what is the positives and negatives to adding on with a different use year if one happened to add on via the resale route? I can imagine it would be mostly negatives trying to coordinate multiple use years at the same resort since I've heard enough problems in MS with point allocations.

Thanks in advance,
John

you can't really "add-on" a different UY month. it will be a completely separate contract with a different member number.

coordinating multiple banking windows and having to transfer pts to be able to pool them together for booking a stay makes it a bad idea for most people - too much hassle.

but some travel at different times of the year and like having more options so that they never have to travel in the last few months of a contract's use year.

You don't really avoid MF but they are pro-rated the first year of your add-on. When you add on through Disney at a resort that is fully open, you get a full set of current Use Year points and your annual dues the first year are pro-rated from your purchase date. (The rules are more complicated if you purchase new construction.)

If you have a March UY and add on in Feb 2011, you would still be in your 2010 UY so Disney would start you off with Feb 2010 points assuming they still had them in inventory so late in the UY. You would owe annual dues for 2011 starting from Feb X, 2011.

If you waited until March 1st to add on, you would be in your 2011 UY so you would start with Feb 2011 points. You would owe annual dues for 2011 starting from March 1, 2011. So you would owe a couple of weeks less in dues but would miss out on a year's worth of points.

ETA: One way to relate dues and Use Year points with a March UY is that your 2010 dues would cover 2/12ths of your 2009 UY points and 10/12ths of your 2010 UY points. Your 2011 dues would cover 2/12ths of your 2010 UY points and 10/12ths of your 2011 UY points. If you purchase an add-on in Feb 2011 (the last month of your 2010 UY), you get the 2010 UY points in full but pay less than 1/12th of the total dues for those points. But be aware that they don't have an unlimited supply of points. You could find that by waiting until the last minute to try to minimize your dues that they have run out of points for your UY.

Would it be a different member number if I did an add-on in the resale market with the same use year or could they be the same?

Thanks in advance,
John

Same UY and same names on the title = same member number number and account. It's just added on to the account that you already have.
