I am looking to add on a small number of points. I was all set to add on at SSR but then we stayed at BLT for a few nights. We are surprised by how much we loved it. If you buy points at a different resort do you get another contract number? Is there any advantage to buying the same UY?

I suggest that you spend some time reading other posts on the same subject because there are pros and cons.

I recommend that you keep the same UY which will add the new purchase to the existing master contract.

Keep in mind that home resort points can only be used at the home resort at 11 months, everywhere at 7 months.

If you purchase directly thru DVC, you will have the same Use Year and the 2nd contract will be added to your current membership.

If you purchase a resale with a different Use Year you will have a 2nd membership number. There can be an advantage to a different Use Year if it allows you more flexibility regarding when you will travel. There is minimal (if any) additional effort to manage multiple Use Years. We have 3 currently and have had as many as four and have never lost single point in 19 years. There are some good (free) programs to help track your points as well as the DVC member site. Even a simple checkbook program, like quicken, can easily track DVC points for multiple resorts and Use Years.

If you find a contract that works for you with a different Use Year don't let it slip by for that reason.

Enjoy! :)

Thanks! I think I am getting it. I think I need to spend some time thinking about UY. My current UY is working but having more flexibility might be helpful.

Just to add to Doc's post, if you purchase resale and the same UY AND the contract is titled exactly as your current contract, it should be added to your current master contract as if you purchased retail. The only difference in that situation is that the resale points would be non qualified and couldn't be used for cash type exchanges (DCL, Concierge or Disney Collection or ABD). They would still be OK to use for RCI or BVTC and for DVC resorts the same as retail subject to the home resort priority caveat. IF you change the title listing at all, it will be separate even if the same UY. I know of a couple of instances where DVC didn't realize and didn't list them under the same Master contract through simple oversight. If you get to this point we can give you instructions of how to minimize this risk.

I agree that multiple contracts or UY is not a big deal and can have some advantages. Current advantages include the timing of trips to a given UY that Doc suggested but also more transfer options due to the one per UY restriction. Disadvantages include the extra math and in some cases, using the points from multiple contracts for a single reservation can be a little more complicated and may not be able to be completed online.

Realize one very important aspect. Timeshare and their rules change. What we've given you is as we understand it and how it's worked historically. DVC or DVD could make a change tomorrow that would turn all of this on it's ear. Always expect the worse and hope for the best.
