Adding additional driver to Emerald Club

I know your spouse is supposed to be a free additional driver with Emerald Club but how do I get added to my DH's ressie? My mom used EC for the first time in Aug but my dad flew in later in the week. They called to ask and were told to add at the counter when they checked in. After he got there they went to a National counter at Disney and they said spouse is automatically applied, no need to show driver's license, name or anything. That just sounds rather sketchy? It'd be great if that worked. I usually don't drive but I want to be able to if the need comes up. That same thing did happen in Vegas. We stopped in to add me to my DH's rental and they said it's automatic. Different company though. Any thoughts or hints?

An automatic additional driver (such as spouse) does not need to be present. For other additional drivers, both the renter and the new driver will need to be present at a National desk. There may be a fee for adding a non-automatic additional driver. I think my family paid $5 per day in Kauai last month, but a different amount may apply at MCO. Best of luck -- Suzanne

If you read the Emerald Club rules, there is a line in there about having a 'verbal' agreement w/the additional driver. It sounded funny, but that is the way I read it. They just have to have permission from the renter.

I was checking to add me to our ressie. When I filled out the additional driver info it tried to charge me an extra $70.

I received the following response from National:

My Question:

Message: I believe that as an Emerald Club member, my wife can be added as an additional driver for free. Do I have to go to the counter to do this when I pickup my vehicle?

National's Response:

Dear Mr. XXXXXX:

Thank you for your email. Your wife is considered an authorized driver as long as she is over 25 years old and her address on her driver's license matches yours on all your rentals. You will not need to contact the counter or the location regarding her unless she is under 25 years old and wishes to drive. Please email us again if you have any further questions or comments.

Sincerely,
xxxxxxxx

DH is an EC member and he usually drives the rental car, but I've always shown my license to the gate attendant when leaving National's garage. It sounds like I don't have to do this. Does anyone else do this?

We did not show my wifes ID and for my parents, the rental was under my moms name and my dad drove out. No questions asked.
