Adding a 4th passenger (1 year old) in a triple?

My wife and I are cruising the Wonder with our 5 year old DD on May 8; we also have an 18 month old, but we'd planned on leaving her with the grandmothers for this cruise, because we're considering this trip as a surprise birthday present for our older daughter. She's been feeling a bit jealous and neglected over the past months with all of the extra attention her little sister has been getting (ear tube surgery, etc.), so we thought this might be a nice surprise "just for her".

As I should have predicted, however, my wife is having second thoughts about leaving "her baby" for 4 days, and she asked me to find out if we could add her to our party.

That's a long intro to my question: we have reserved a Cat 6 stateroom that technically only sleeps 3 (it has the single sofa-bed but no pull-down). I called All-Seas, and their agent told me they cannot allow us to add a fourth person in that stateroom, even if she's only 18 months (She could easily sleep between my wife and me in the queen bed.) And all the quad rooms are sold out.

I have no problem with that policy; makes sense to me. But I wonder whether any of you are aware of any exceptions that may have been made in cases involving smaller children. Seems like the intent of the policy is to avoid overcrowded staterooms -- they don't want people sleeping on the floor, etc. But we're literally just adding 24 pounds of cute little girl, and there's plenty of bed space for the rest of us.

If anyone has any experience with this issue, I'd appreciate any information you could provide.

Unfortunately a lot of people have been in this same situation.. The rules are there, and they do not budge. My cousin had this dilemna with her 2 year old. She has to change staterooms, even though all her daughter paid was port charges... Part of this is due to the laws, enough lifejackets for everyone (babies included), and how may people are in room. You could find someone else who may be cruising at the same time as you with extra space in their room, who can add her. Disny does not concern themselves after the fact, like you could keep her in your room, just technically book her in another...

Good Luck...and 60 days out is when rooms open up because people cancel, so you will have more look with the quad room... :)

depomas: thanks for the information; that was enlightening. I suppose I just need to keep checking for cancellations . . .

I think of this rule in the same way that Chip & Dale Express so eloquently states the "Only four people in the front of the monorail rule": The moment they are born, they count!"

This is what I was told:

We just got back Sat from a 7nt and rebooked for 9/06 for 3 of us...we have been trying for #2 and hopefully will have 4 by then...we booked a Cat 9 that would hold either 3 or 4...this is what the rep said...this ship hold a certain # of passengers ~2700??? so even though all the Cat 9's can hold 4 they are identical some are "labeled" as 3 only b/c they have a maximum capacity and that's how they calculate it. I hope it makes sense???

Good luck!

I hope your wife will reconsider if all the quads remain booked and you have to other option left. :(

mommyz: that makes sense as well -- and in truth, I'm glad Disney considers total # of passengers when assigning cabin capacity. Makes the cruise more enjoyable for everyone.

ivanova: Thanks for your concern. For now, she's indicated she still wants to cruise even if our little one stays with her grandparents. Frankly, I think it would be good for both of them to get a break from each other, but, as I've been informed, I'm just a man. :worship:

We booked at category 12 guarantee and we are 2 adults, a 9 year old and a 1 year old. Since the 1 year old will be in a crib, we do not need 4 beds. Will we be bumped up to category 11 because we have 4 people in a cabin but only need 3 beds?

rejobako - When our daughter turned 5 we took her to Disneyland and left baby brother with Grandma and Grandpa for all of the reasons that you stated in your post. It was so good for her to have quality time - and Grandma and Grandpa were perfectly good sitters for a few days. Everyone survived. And our son will never remember that we went on that trip and left him. He would have never remembered Disneyland either as a baby, but our daughter still remembers that trip and she is a young teen now. I say leave the trip as it is - each kid deserves quality time. I still try to take my kids out one on one to movies, etc... for that reason.

Are you sure that is accurate information? Because some staterooms don't have the pull down bed...which makes them only a three person stateroom. The passporter notes cat. 8 & 9's as sleeping 2-4 but I couldn't find any other information on bed layouts and why only 2 people. However...I do know DCL will limit the number of kids aboard...so even if there are rooms open..if the maximum number of children are booked...the cruise will still show up as FULL...for familys with kids.

Our room was tagged as limit 3 people; but there was a ladder and a pull out sofa overhead (we were nosy one day and pulled it out!)

That's what the rep told us but you never know??? I think it's there way of not going over there limits.

I agree, are you sure about this? The Cat 6's that we've always stayed in only sleep 3 and I believe that there are some that will sleep 4. It's the same with our upcoming cruise on the Golden Princess in July, my kids are in an inside cabin that sleeps 3, but not all of them do have the 3rd bed in it, actually the cabin next to theirs does not.

Yes, you will definitely be bumped up to at least a category 11. Congratulations!
