Adam LaRoche

I've just read that before even signing with the club, it was agreed and written in his contract that his son could be there. Also, the VP told him first to scale it back to less than 50% of the time, and then that the son could not be at games at all. That version of the story makes more sense as to why LaRoche would retire and why many of his teammates are upset by it. Also, the players union is supposedly getting involved because of the stipulation in his contract.

^ Yes. I was listening to the MLB Sirius Network in the car this morning and the hosts, former players themselves, were saying that he went to the White Sox last year, in part, because he was promised his son could be with him in the clubhouse as much as he wanted. Some other comments they had were that they were concerned for the son as far as his father quitting the game, that some day he'll be to "blame" that his father left early (and lost out on $13 million more). Hmm, ok, could be. They also thought that this should've been worked out in the off-season,, not in the middle of spring training. Fair point. Basically they felt both "sides" handled it poorly. I agree a lot of players bring their kids to the clubhouse, but I don't think it's to the degree that this guy does. I'm not sure but I think he just feels strongly about it personally.

I don't believe it is anything official; players will announce they are retired and that is about how official it gets. Since most retire when their skills are gone, they don't usually un-retire. So I guess it's possible that LaRoche could come back if some team is okay with his son hanging around.

I also just read that it was in his contract that he was allowed to bring his son. He was brought up that way while his father played in the majors so he wants his son to be brought up the same way. He is retiring because the team broke the signed contract they had.

They said on the show that there are "retirement papers" that have to be signed, but they haven't signed them yet in the hopes he'll change his mind.

Maybe I am stereotyping but....I have a vision of men hanging around in their underwear and various states of undress, working with trainers, looking at Playboys, swearing, talking about women, etc. I know that sounds bad, but that is what I imagine.

Probably a better scene though then what the kid would get at any of the junior high schools in the neighborhoods surrounding the White Sox's stadium.

This guy is off the charts with his sense of entitlement. It's a job, not 'take-your-kid-to-work' day. And he certainly doesn't need to be there all the time.

No doubt. I am a native Chicagoan (lived there for the first 34 years of my life) and am very familiar with the area. However, I am sure that is not where LaRoche lives and I am quite sure not where he would be sending his kids to school.
