Three generations of my family will be going to visit Mickey Mouse in Florida at the end of June 2012. We are staying at Sheraton Vistana Villages for the week. We plan on going to Magic Kingdom for one day, and maybe Epcot, but are trying to find other activities. The ages of our group: Grandpa, 59; Grandma, 54; Mom (me), 36; aunt, 34; aunt 26; little DD 8.
Thanks for any ideas!

What type of budget are you looking at and can you travel? Cocoa Beach is not that far away for a day at the beach and then of course you have Sea World or Universal as well. For shopping there are several outlet malls that you can check out or downtown Disney is always fun and lots of fun things to see and do there.

Be sure to sign up for emails from Groupon http://www.groupon.com/orlando/ and Living Social http://www.livingsocial.com/cities/75-orlando as they often have great deals on Orlando activities for kids (and big kids ;) ) of every age.

Some other ideas.............

  • SeaWorld (my favourite park! :thumbsup2 )
  • Gatorland
  • A water park
  • Mini golf (Pirates Cove is fantastic, and there are many others along the length of International Drive)
  • An airboat ride
  • A dinner show (Outta Control Comedy show, Pirates Adventure, Medieval Times, etc.)
  • A day at Cocoa Beach
  • Any of the various attractions along I-Drive.....Titanic, The Experience; Ripleys Believe it Or Not; Wonderworks, etc.
And don't rule out shopping. The Florida Mall has a fun M&M store that's worth a visit!

What about a trip to go fruit picking http://www.showcaseofcitrus.com/

Took the words right out of my mouth.

We have been many times and with all different aged individuals and they all have enjoyed both the experience and the fruits of their labor.

Also we have enjoyed many hours around the pool area with a group.
A good gsme of volley ball in the pool with all ages and we were at the Vistana resort on 535 and had perfect stranger ranging from 8 to 80 it was a ball!

My group other then me enjoys Gatorland. It is clean and enjoyable to a point with me but I am not a big fan of animals but did enjoy the walking around and looking from afar. They could not get enough.

Down town Disney was a hit with our group something for every one. In addition to fun eats.

We also had a ball at farris and fosters choclate making family night. Not close by but we have been 3 times and have had a great time and again enjoyed the fruits of our labor the rest of the trip.

We always go down in a big mixed age group.
It has always been an enjoyable time.

That being said we are not with each other 24/7 and we alll have our own vehicles.

Here are ideas that might work for your group. I think you'll love the Vistana too. We haven't stayed at the Villages, but have stayed at the sister property the Vistana Resort four different times with our multigenerations group. You'll enjoy some relaxation time at the pools I'm sure too, and look to see too if any of their organized activities have any appeal to you. The resort puts out a weekly schedule, so I imagine the Villages would too.

1) OK it's a theme park but so much different than Disney. The grandparents and parents in our extended family group love the beautiful grounds, outstanding shows, and animal exhibits. // DS 16 loves the animal exhibits, two fun coasters (my mom, brother, and I love these coasters too), wonderful shows and is going to a high school aged camp here this summer. My nieces and nephews have always loved this place too. It was DS's favorite park at age 3 and is still his favorite at age 16.// This is a better park for a multigenerational group than Disney parks IMHO and our family's favorite. // Oh and with an eight year old the Shamu Happy Harbor play area is so cool -- it caters to elementary / older elementary and we took our kids to that through age 12. // You can also get day 2 free in a seven day period if you want to come back by just stopping at the customer ticket window. (I see it's a favorite of one of the other posters who responged too).

2) Resort Hop at Disney -- Visit some of the Disney resort hotels and walk around. We like to park at the Polynesian walk around there (Just say you are there to shop or eat and they will give you a three hour parking pass), take the monerail over the the Grand Floridian and Contemporary and walk around those -- stop in the gift shops at each, at the Polynesian maybe pick up a Dole Whip and sit our by the pool or beach. Depending on how much time we have, we have sometimes taken the little boats over to Wilderness Lodge to look at their grounds too and see the little man made geyser they put in. // On a different day we like to do a meal at the Animal Kingdom Lodge and walk around their grounds before and after and look at the animals. The main lobby of the hotel is spectacular too. // good for all ages

3) We like Gatorland too. It's a three hour attraction -- Think more old time Florida attraction and maybe a little cheesy vs. World class theme park, but it is a great break from "World Class theme parks", something a little different and a good time. It's excellent for a multigenerational group too.

I think that if I were going to go to the beach I'd pick a Gulf Coast beach - generally shallower and warmer water, finer and softer sand and potentially greater chance to find shells. We like Fort De Soto Park Beach but there are many of them over there.

If you're looking for something that's a bit of 'old Florida' try the Scenic Boat Tours on the lakes and through the canals near Winter Park (just north of Orlando). If kind of corny but a nice calm (and fairly inexpensive) break from the hectic theme park activities. And there are shops and restaurants in the close-by Park Avenue district of Winter Park.

For mini-golf we've enjoyed most of them over the years but we really like the Disney Fantasia Gardens mini-golf that's located across from the Swan and Dolphin hotels. Part of a day there and the BoardWalk Resort area can be fun. BoardWalk has a number of shops and restaurants.

I agree with kathy884 that your family should take time to enjoy the resort. Vistana Villages is a very nice resort with a lot to offer. There are fitness rooms, pools, hot tubs and small playgrounds at the Key West, Bella Florida and St. Augustine Villages, a restaurant at the Bella Florida pool and a small bar/grille at St. Augustine's, basketball courts in Bella Florida and Key West, and volleyball, shuffleboard and tennis at Key West. Barbecue grills all around the resort. And the kids' Spanish Galleon water feature at St. Augustine.
