Activating Annual Passes

We have our vouchers for our APs and are trying to figure out where and when to activate them for our July trip. If we activate them at guest relations the day we arrive and don't go into the parks, is that considered the first day of our 365? Are they activated when we first enter a park? Trying to plan our strategy for arrival day. We were also wondering if it's easier to activate in DTD or in the parks?
