ACT Prep Classes

Has your college-bound child ever done the ACT Prep Class through Hunington or Sylvan Learning Center? My son took the ACT and we'd like to see it a point or two higher, so I was thinking of signing him up for the summer classes in preparation for the September ACT test.

His school offered an online course but I don't think it did as much good as an in-person class would do.

I'd like to hear your pros and cons? What did you pay? Was it worth the price?

My son took ACT prep at Huntington last fall/winter. First they have you take a practice ACT in the office. Then they look at what types of questions/subjects are the trouble areas. From there, they will recommend how may hours of one on one tutoring/review would be appropriate for your child.

It is expensive (roughly $60/hour if my memory is correct). Depending on what they recommend, there might be a disocutn if you pay for all or half up front. I think we ended up with around $2500.

That being said, I think it was totally worth it. My son's score went up approx 7 points form the initial practice test. He was never a strong standardized test taker, but is an excellent student. Now he has an ACT score to match. He should be able to get accepted into several engineering schools and get merit scholarship money that will exceed what we paid for ACT prep.

The one on one tutoring gave him confidence. The school offered prep classes are very general and don't address the individual needs.
