Just got home last night and presented our kids with their gifts, and one shirt still has the security tag on it. Do they use security tags at The Disney Store, and would they take this one off? I'm sure we've got the receipt. Or is there a way we can get it off ourselves? I swore after the last incident of a security tag being left on (not at Disney) that I'd always check, but...I didn't.

This happened to us last February! We called the number on the receipt and they suggested that we could either find a local store that uses ink tags or we could send it back to WDW and they would replace it and refund us our shipping cost. We took it to the mall and found that JCPenney was able to remove it for us (we showed our receipt from WDW!).

Good luck!

Edited to add: DO NOT try to remove it yourself -- WDW uses ink tags so the ink would splatter all over!

We had that happen with an Easter dress from Nordstrom.

Ended up at Walmart at some ungodly hour trying to get it taken care of before church services Sunday morning.
Luckily they used the same system and removed it for us no problem.

I'd find the receipt and hit the mall with it. I bet you'll find a store with the same security tags. What a pain though. :sad2:

Good Luck!

I had a tag left on a swim suit. I was out of town--so went to the mall with bag and receipt and went to every store that had one. Finally found a dept store that did have the right remover. ACtually--they had a few. One of their loss prevention people helped me. They can usually tell you are on the up and up.

But don't remove it yourself!

The safe bet would be to try to find a place that could remove it. If that doesn't work, you can freeze it and remove it.

We removed one successfully ourselves once with directions I found on the web by googling "removing store security tags".

But it was NOT an ink tag. You might be able to find info online.

Have you done this successfully?? How did you remove it after it was frozen?? I called WDW about mine and the CM said it was a magnet??

I've never done it but I've worked in retail security and that is how thieves get ink tags off.

If you have a JCPenney near you, I'd try there before I'd chance removing it myself. Also, try other department stores that use security tags, but be sure you have the receipt with you.

Any local store that uses the tags should be able to take it off for you - just make sure to take your receipt with you.

This reminds me of a funny (well, funny now) story. On my wedding day as we were getting ready, my mom discovered that the security tag was still on her gown. Luckily a friend of a friend worked at a local department store and met her at the door to take it off. She drove like a bat out of h$** to get there and back in 45 minutes. Luckily, that was the worst thing that happened on our wedding day!

all tags are different.
some use a magnet to open them. in which case a rare earth magnet placed in teh correct spot would open it.

some are made with magnets, which require them to be pryed (sp?) open.

and then we've got the really interesting ones. Ink ones.

It is POSSIBLE to remove them yourself, but I would not recomend it unless you are SURE you are doing it correctly.

Try taking it to a JCpenney's near you. they could take it off for you.

I had this happen to me from WDW in November. I had the replacement dress in less than a week. I then put it in the envelope and sent it back. I know they will refund you for shipping it back but it was only a couple of dollars and I didn't even bother calling them about it. They were really wonderful about getting the new one!!

good luck to you!

Since Murphy's Law usually takes over, if it were me, I wouldn't try to remove it. I'm in the "take it to the mall" crowd!!

Hi! I work at a Disney Store and I can't tell you how many times we have poor guests come into the store with the same problem. We always feel so bad that we can't help! We don't have that kind of security tag in our store. She did end up going to Filene's department store in their leather department and they removed it for her. Good luck to you! :goodvibes

I'll be near a JC Penney tomorrow, so I'll try that first. Thanks!

Your poor mom! And YOU! Like you need that on your wedding day. Two months ago, my DD got a prom dress at David's Bridal. A couple of days before the prom we brought it to the mall to a store where my niece works to have her help pick out jewelry. As we went into one store (Filene's, I think), we set off the alarm. So we took the dress out and looked, and sure enough, there was a security tag, so we stopped at David's Bridal to get it taken off. Good thing we found it days before the prom!

One thing I don't get about security tags...how come they don't always set off the alarm in the store you buy the item in? How'd we get out of World of Disney with it on? How'd we get out of David' Bridal (and then back in) with it on DD's prom dress? :confused3 So much for security.

That is why we never used them. They are not effective at all, they just cause an inconvenience for good customers. Thieves know how to get around them and they often don't even work. There are relatively simple ways to block having them go off as well.

this happened to us - we bought an outfir from the All Star Sports store and got home to find the tag on.
DH tried to get it off DON"T do that! (I'm actually writing about this for my trip report as we speak!! )
We returned it the next time we went.

Ink tags don't beep. They are supposed to deter shoplifters because the item wouldn't be able to be used if ink were to splatter all over the shoplifted item.

My mom bought DH a hat last time she was at WDW and didn't notice the tag was still on. Honestly, my DH just snapped it off with wire cutters and the ink capsules didn't break. But I'm with the crowd that says having it removed at the mall is the safest way to assure success.
