ok -
so I started a layout very early this morning -
and I stamped pink mickie head, glove, and the word 'wished' with pink on black paper - covered them with Ulta Thich Embossing Powder and used the old heat gun -
NOW hours later and in different lighting I am looking at it and some spots appear 'yellowed'
did I burn it??
I don't think I want to go through the work of redoing it all - I don't think anyone would notice - but I would hate for it to happen again! What did I do wrong?? :confused3

Boy Patty, I don't know. What color was the embossing powder?

I don't know the "official" answer to this, but I've had the 'melted' powder get odd before. I would say burnt, but it was a dark color so it was difficult to actually see it. It got kind of grainy - went right through the smooth phase & into the grainy phase. :confused3 Now I try to only heat until it gets shiny. Then I stop & check it. If it needs a bit more I'll heat a little longer.

I don't know if this would affect it, but I've seen numerous demos with the clear powder.. For a thick coat, they usually do several layers rather than all at once. I don't know if that would have affected your outcome or not.

I had a weird thing happen last week too. I used dye ink to color some castle punches. The ink pad had 4 metallic colors & I wanted to put clear embossing powder on it. Well, the ink made the paper almost feel wet (I was trying for a darker covering/color) but I added the embossing powder anyway. I heated it to melt the powder & let them sit until the next day before putting through my Xyron.

The embossed layer flaked off in a bunch of spots for most of them. :( I was very disappointed as I really liked the look. Any hints on what went wrong?

Did you use the right kind of ink for the embossing? I'm pretty sure you need to use ink that is approved for embossing...or at least they have me suckered into buying the stuff.

Actually, it's pretty standard to be able to use various inks for embossing. I've often used dye ink because it's so much wetter than standard stamp pad ink & it works fine. I haven't tried it, but many crafters use the "best quality" setting on their printer to get a wetter printout which you can then pour embossing powder on. (It sticks because the ink was wet.)

The cracking/peeling problem I was talking about most likely happened because I had the paper too wet with the ink. I didn't stamp the image - I tried rubbing the paper with the ink pad to color it. I tried adding the embossing powder right away (which was worse) and letting the paper dry & then used my VersaMark pen to cover the castle before adding the powder. I still had some cracking but was able to get a couple that were usable.

Yes you can over heat powder and it will burn. I am very bad about doing that! Your layout looks great! Can't tell Mickey was burned. At least not with the picture. I bet no one will notice it even in person.
