:scared1: Had to call today to get someone here, to check out our hot water tank (funny noises, suddenly). Well, it needs replaced. (it's 17 yrs old...it gave us lots of years of service).

I don't even have time to really shop around. :headache:

So does $830 sound reasonable for a 40-gallon gas water tank heater (Lochinvar brand)? I am soooo worried we're being overcharged because we have to choose quickly. I wouldn't even know another company to call, this is the one family members have used for years.

I hope the few things we haven't yet replaced in this house behave for a while now. In the past 1 1/2 yrs, the furnace, stove, washer, dryer, and now hot water tank.

it's a good price as long as that includes installation.

We've had 3 hot water tanks installed (don't ask! LOL) and price plus install for a 40gal runs approx $750 here.

Thanks. We knew when we fixed this hot water tank 10 yrs ago that it was on borrowed time (it completely soaked our floors/carpets that time). Now it sounds like a teapot...."Screeeeeeeeeeech". It's time, lol.

I wish we'd have replaced it along with the furnace last year, maybe they'd have given us a multi-appliance discount, haha.

if you have gas, check into rebates for energy star certified

For the government's tax credit, they told me it has to be a tankless one...which would run me triple the cost. Wonder if there are other rebates out there??

That's a good price. I'd almost see how much a little bigger size would be if there are 4 or more of you in the house.

I'd only go tankless if I were building new...or doing a major remodel.

Yes the price is ok with installation.

Our budget busted last week - driving the car a tire burst.
Luckily - just entering the expressway ramp and not on the expressway yet.
Hit the right side wall. Newer car. Over 6th damage.
The BEST is no one was hurt and it did not cause an accident with other cars entering. Thanks for insurance, but the deductible is $500.00.

I'm scared to go bigger, it has to squeeze into the furnace closet in the main hallway of our little house, lol. I'm already a little worried because the more recent 40 gallon ones are apparently slightly wider because of better construction, insulation, etc. It's gonna be interesting, I bet!!

oooh, I don't know - we have electric so it was not an option at all :(

going tank-less shouldn't cost you that much more it should be about $400 more.

I know they said it's not all the tankless ones, and the ones included start at almost $3000 with installation (apparently have to change how the pipes all come in/go out/whatever.) If we stick with the same kind (tank), they are replacing all pipes but in the same configuration, etc.

I don't really understand it all. I just know that, like the stupid furnace, we got slammed with no notice. And the fridge sounded REALLY bad last night, suddenly (12 yrs old). EEK. Gonna start shaving days off of dd's graduation-replacing vacation. :sad2:

Mine went on Saturday all the water on my basement floor.During the blizzard. It cost $430 just for the heater itself.(My husband put it in) sounds like a good price with somebody else installing. I wanted a tankless. But couldn't affore 1500 for it rightnow.

Electric water heater? Did they tell you exactly what is wrong with it? We had one that had a problem and dh and I were able to fix it ourselves...all it needed was a new heating element (drain the water, remove the old element, plug in a new one). Unless it's leaking, maybe you can get away with repairing it for the time being.

Mine is gas. We did get it repaired when it flooded our carpet, years ago. But the guy yesterday shone a flashlight where the pilot light is, and showed me the water marks all in there. There has been "DRIP...*SIZZLE*...........DRIP...*SIZZLE........" for months now, but yesterday the hot tea kettle steam sound started. I don't think I love owning a house. I think I'm a born renter.

And dang it all, I have a HUGE water mess now. my hallway carpet, the furnace filters (stored in the furnace closet, everything. The guy said the water won't shut off (the valve apparently went bad since the last time we used it a couple of weeks ago to fix the bathroom tub) so he borrowed towels, but the floor flooded.

What a crazy mess. I can hear it still. Not a trickle, but not a full-blown POURING out, either. All over the floor.

It didn't even turn off our water, the kitchen sink still pours out full-blast.

In Ohio...Vectren is also offering $100-150 on some that are energy efficient. We are going to replace our softener and gas water heater, it's only 10 years old but we have iron/hard bad well water! We are looking at 3 models 1) tankless ($3400) 2) Vortex 50 gal(energy efficient and doesn't run out of hot water) $1500 3)Conservationist 50 gal $952.00. There is the cheapest from Sears since they don't last that long we are tempted. I just hate running out of hot when we use the spa tub. We got quotes from two area pumbers with good rep. both have worked for us before and both were within several hundred of each other, so your quote sounds good.

WAY more than $400, they need to put a pipe that goes outside the house either thru a wall or the roof, they can't use the heaters because the tankless gets so hot. $3000 would be inexpensive for a tankless, we are also concerned about space in our garage closet we have the heater, water softener, water heater and water conditioner. I know with only 3 of us we need the 50 gal. although he did say with the Vortex we could get by with the 40 even with the spa tub. You can check them out online, DH has been researching for weeks now. It's nice that ours is still working. Our last one at our old house went out when we were at WDW! Welcome home! It was electric and 18 years old, the city water was better than our well.

I'm sorry :(. I hope the fridge holds on for you and the water doesn't do any damage to the house.

I had a tankless installed in July and it cost me $6,630 for instalation etc..
the tankless has to be placed on an outside wall because it has to be vented to outside. they cut a hole in my plexiglass window because they couldn't cut through the stone basement walls. My house was built in 1898 so it is old thick stone.
I put it into my taxes and got nothing back. I did taxact.com and they did ask the price etc but it didn't change my return at all so I am upset about that. I mainly went with that one because of the rebate. I could have saved tons of money with a big tank like I have had since I moved into this house 30 years ago.
