DH has been having trouble with acid reflux lately and doctor started him on prilosec. We have been trying to determine what may be aggravating it. At his work, they have recently starting making coffee and he is drinking a couple of cups a day. I googled it and it seems some say coffee does make it worse but other sites say it is a myth. We are looking for some personal experience with coffee and acid reflux. Does it bother you? Thanks!

DH is a LONG time sufferer...Coffee, anything with tomatoes/acidic is a nightmare. Anything carbonated. That being said, DH is a coffee drinker ( and beer moderately) takes Prilosec each a.m., supplemented with pepcid and Gaviscon tablets as needed. He needs to sleep with his head/ upper torso on an angle. I saw Folgers has a low acid coffee, but I have only been able to find it a few times. Your DH will have to actually go a few days w/out coffee to really see if it is the culprit or not.

Does he use a lot of sugar? I have the same problem with tea but I think it's because of the sugar that I put in it-not the tea itself.

I suffer from it as well, and whether it's a myth or not, once I stopped the coffee, the symptoms were reduced. I also found, in my case, if I watch the amount I eat, it helps as well. I've gotten it to a point that I only have to use an OTC product occasionally, instead of prescription medications.

Thanks! I will suggest he lay off the coffee for a couple of days! Thanks for the tip about low acid coffee. I didn't have a clue they have low acid coffee. I am not a coffee drinker.

As for the question about sugar, no he is a diabetic so he doesn't use sugar.
I do make tea with splenda. Wonder if they would be a problem?

DH's doctor told him to drink decaf coffee and decaf soda.

Somebody at work has been having problems like this and was told to stay away from peppermint, coffee, and carbonated drinks.

I suffer from pretty bad acid reflux from a hiatal hernia. My dr recommended cutting out pepermint, chocolate, tomato based products, switching to only clear soda and decaf coffee. Oddly, no rx meds worked, so I am on plain old Pepcid AC, and I cut out all but the tomato based procucts (I'm of Italian descent, might as well tell me to go on a starvation diet) and coffee. But I have cut back to half-caf coffee, and way fewer tomato sauces than in the past.
I eat less so my stomach does not push up into my diaphram, and I sleep propped up. I have seen a great improvement over the time it took to make these changes- I did a little at a time, so as not to "fall off that wagon" and eat all the wrong things in a stressful moment.

Hopefully, you DH can make a few minor changes and find some relief.

Coffee
Tea
Soda
Any juice of any kind

Constipation

The usual tomato anything and spicy foods as well.

I cannot EVER drink lemon lime anything, Sprite, 7UP, etc

Also recently WINE....:sad2:

It keeps getting worse as I age. It really sucks.

I have GERD and my experience with coffee really varies. If I know i'm going to be drinking a lot of tea, coffee, soda, etc. that day i'll take my prevacid and it helps a lot. But I find that if I have a full stomach that a cup of coffee won't hurt. Now, if it's a GIANT cup then maybe i'll have a little bit of reflux. I just have to limit my coffee which is tough cause I love it so much! Just make sure you have something in your stomach

I recently was diagnosed with severe reflux. I have to take 3 different pills per day and it's STILL not in order.

I am also a coffee drinker.

Coffee highly acidic and as of last Monday, I had to go coffee free. It was getting to be too much.

My reflux presented different than the standard. My throat swells - bad. I go from looking normal to having 3 chins in a matter of 10 minutes when it gets bad. We chased my thyroid, allergies... nothing added up. The doctor kept telling me that I had reflux and I didn't believe him because I didn't have heartburn. I took the first round of meds and they made me sick to my stomach (ironic, huh?) I'm on a different regimine now, and it's not strong enough (I go back next week for a follow-up).

I had to stop drinking my morning coffee and it is rough! The headaches have kicked in, I feel tired... and grumpy! My supervisor brought me some samples of Teeccino (we call it "faux joe"). There's not 1 oz of coffee in it. The regular flavor is a little rough, my super drinks the hazelnut. I'm on my first sample pack this morning and so far, I'm not having a reaction. Here's to hoping...

I had bad reflux, to the point that Prilosec was not effective any more and I was taking Nexium. Then I went on a cruise and started taking ginder capusles every day. I noticed a significant improvement. I have continued taking the ginger and have stopped the Nexium. No more reflux.
