Hello All,

I am new to this forum and I found lots of useful threads regarding the children education stuff here. Hope you can suggest some steps for my son's educational career. My son is turning in to 6 by this September and will attend kindergarten (Dallas, Tx). I would like to evalulate his skills to find out what level he is at as he is going to pre-school for the past 1 year. He reads okay over the small sentences, but can't understand the meaning of the words. Do you all have any suggestions for the best reading centers? Such as sylvan or kumon...etc. Do you have any suggestions for the national or state level exams or achievement tests for the kinder and so on. Really appreciate for your inputs.

Regards
Renu.

only advice i can give you, is let him go to school and be a normal kid. if he is a high achiever, he will get there.

I think you're right on with Sylvan. Check with them first. They would know all of the achievement tests out there -- and perhaps would administer them as well.

Good for you for being an involved parent. Education is so important!

You obviously care a great deal about his education, which already shows in his progress so far I'm sure. I think the best gift you could give him is to stop worrying about it and just concentrate on providing a rich learning environment for him at home and at school.

Unless you have academic concerns, what possible good could testing him do at this point? What are you trying to document?

I'm also not sure what your reasons are for wanting to have your son assessed, but we had our own reasons for wanting to assess our dd. We tried EVERYTHING!! We contacted UNT, our local school districts, Kumon, Sylvan, and on and on. No one seemed to be willing/able to help us.

I finally got a referral to Cornerstone Assessment. The psychologist spent 3 days assessing our dd, thru MANY different standardized tests. She gave us a very detailed report of where our dd is on lots of different abilities and intelligences. It was very interesting, but it was also expensive ($1500). However, in our opinion....it was very worth it.
