Accomodations for 16?

Not for me ... that's way too many people in 1 house for my comfort.

It's actually a request for my neighbor.

Her mom expressed wanting the entire family to take a WDW vacation. The entire family consists of 16 people of all different ages. The oldest being the parents, probably in their 60's and the youngest almost 1 yr old. My best guess would be a rental home with, at the very least, 5 bedrooms. Here's how the families are:
Family #1 - 2 adults
Family #2 - 2 adults and 4 children
Family #3 - 3 adults
Family #4 - 2 adults, 1 child and 1 on the way (due date?)
Family #5 - 2 adults

I told her I'd ask here because for that many people I just don't know even know where to start looking.

Well, I think you're going to need bigger than a 5 bedroom house, more like a 7 bedroom house. Vacation homes are licensed for a certain amount of people, a 5 bedroom would be good for only 10, 12 at the most. Try looking on vrbo.com in the Kissimmee area. These are some subdivisions that have 7 or more br homes: Formosa Gardens, Emerald Island, Terra Verde, Acadia Estates. Something like this one:

We usually rent from owners so that we can pick the subdivision and exact house we want.

Here are some I've seen that will sleep 16 or more....I know nothing about these so I can't "recommend" them, but it gives your neighbor some to inquire about.

The other suggestion I would have is to find a "community" that rents out the entire neighborhood and see if you can get 2 or 3 homes so that the whole extended family aren't in the same house....of course that would cost more than one giant house, but I'm with you....no way could I handle 16 people all living under the same roof....and if some of them were my brothers/sisters and in laws...well, probably not the same neighborhood!

Ok, that's just two of the websites I've got bookmarked..........but you can see there ARE places big enough and frankly, pretty reasonable if everyone can be happy living under the same roof. The highest priced ones were just over $3,000 a week, but with 6 families, that's only $500 a week....no way a family could stay on site or even in a decent hotel for $70 a night. The average price is in the $2,000+ range.

If you're looking to stay on property how about a couple cabins at fort wilderness lodge? They are beautiful!

The cabins sleep 6-10 people so you could split the cost between some of the families for instance

Family 1, 3 and 5 could stay in a cabin ?

Family 2 and 4 could stay together ?

Also, the home we rented in March is a 6 bedroom in Windsor Hills and the owners also own the 6 bed home right next door (www.valhallavillas.com). they might be willing to deal if you rent out both.

If you want everyone in the same house, I would focus on Formosa Gardens. Not only do many of those homes have more bedrooms, but they have larger and more numerous living areas and larger pools and pool areas as well. (Personally, I wouldn't want to have 16 people in a home with a million bedrooms and one regular sized living room, but that's just me)

We had 12 people in one of the 6 bedroom pool homes 5 years ago. It worked wonderfully. There was 4-5 bathrooms, washer/dryer, full kitchen, private pool, 4-5 TV's (not that those were used for more than checking the weather). I don't think the company we used is still called the same thing, so do a search. We were only about 10 minutes from Disney World property and we had a great time. My one caution would be to have plenty of transportation available so that people are free to come and go as they please. That was our only problem....my dh and I were the only drivers of the 2 rental vehicles so everyone had to go the same places at the same times. This got kind of old for some of them. With the set up of families that your friend is talking about a 7 bedroom should work fine as long as they don't mind putting a couple of kids on the couches in the living room. We love traveling as a large family group. This year we went to an all-inclusive in Mexico for our daughters wedding....there were 31 of us. Next year there are 15 of us sharing a house in Hawaii. It is a pretty economical way to go and we have a great time together.

Not to steer the thread off course, but do you have a link to the house you're renting for 15 in Hawaii? We're getting started planning an extended family trip hopefully 2008...

Have they you / they looked into the possibility of renting DVC points to get a few of the bigger villas? It might be tricky to get that many points together, but it would mean they were on property, so had access to Disney transport, EMH etc. See the DVC boards for more information.

snowbunny. I do have links to the place we are staying. We are staying on the Island of Kauai with all of us and then going to the Big Island with 11 of us. Let me know if you are interested in either of these links and I have a few more choices saved that we didn't choose for various reasons but are still nice.

To the OP re: the suggestion to rent a few DVC units together - this would be ideal (I like to stay on property) but it would cost quite a lot more (even renting points from an owner) than a pool house in Windsor Hills.

Another option available - if the whole family didn't want to stay in the one property would be to rent say 2 pool homes beside each other or maybe 3 townhouses beside each other. That way everyone is still on vacation together but each family still has their own space

It will really just depend on what they are looking for

We'll be staying in St. Andrews Villa in FG this November. I've talked to two other DISers who have stayed in this house and they report that the pictures didn't do it justice.

It might be perfect for your needs... 7 bedrooms
4 king master suites
1 queen master suite
1 bunk rooms w/ 2 sets of bunks (full on bottom, twin on top)
1 twin room, w/ 2 twin beds

The last two rooms share a Jack-n-Jill bathroom.

Franco & Audrey are the owners, and they have been wonderful to work with so far; very responsive to questions etc.

Emerald Island has a range of 7 bedroom homes. www.stayatemeraldisland.com - 7 bedroom homes typically accommodate 16 guests.

When PSH built the community, they had 7 bedroom homes in a Magna Bay model. In addition, they built a small number of homes with larger sq footage and larger lots in an area known as The Enclave. All the models have multiple living & dining areas - some even have a 3rd living area upstairs in the form of a den.

We stayed in a Palm Harbour model over Easter with 15 of us. I was surprised that the home did not feel crowded at all. It had 7 bedrooms, 5.5 bathrooms (all en-suite some private, some jack n jill style), games room in the garage, the den area upstairs and a larger than normal deck which game the whole family plenty of room to play and dine al fresco (there was seating for 16 outside at the two tables).
