Hi all

We are heading over in June/July 2014 for the 3rd time.

Struggling to find accommodation in both San Francisco and Santa Monica.

Would like something clean and safe and reasonably priced.

In San Fran would prefer Fishermans Wharf area but understand this is usually dearer so open to other suggestions.

Have found the Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn express to be reasonable - anyone had experiences with them?

In Santa Monica obviously like to be as close to the beach as possible.

Our main problem is we have 3 adults and 2 children (3yr an 1yr) travelling with us. So usually a problem finding one room to fit all.... and 2 rooms equals double the cost.

Thanks for any ideas suggestions or thoughts

We got a VRBO House in SF, it was at North Beach, 5 minute walk to Fisherman's Wharf. It was good value and really well appointed and had lots of beds. PM me if you want the details.

On Santa Monica, rentals are in some cases are not legal (I use the term loosely) but in other parts of LA they're fine. I will try and find the article I found on it.

Santa Monica - we stayed at holiday inn. 50m from the pier and beach, close to shops, restaurants.

also had a bit of a celebrity spot- saw Dustin Hoffman and Tom cruise stooped for a photo and chat!!!

Always stay at the Columbus Motor Inn in San Fran. Walk to Fishermans Wharf. And also has free parking for what its worth. Big rooms...and I mean BIG, and a ton cheaper than paying for hotels right down on the wharf. Got a bar and takeout restaurant directly over the road.

I was going to suggest the Columbus Motor Inn in San Francisco too. We stayed there at Christmas...DH, DD1 (10), DD2 (7), my Mum and me. We were all in one room but there was plenty of room for us all. My eldest daughter slept with my Mum, and our youngest slept with us.
Really reasonable price, great location and free car parking. It's obviously nothing flash, but it's definitely clean!! We also found it quite quiet.
Hope that helps :)

Our experience with Columbus Motor Inn was the exact opposite, our room was so small that we had to put our cases in the bathroom.

Holiday Inn Express at Fishermans Wharf was good, and had a great breakfast.

We are staying at Handlery Union Square this time.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Fisherman's Wharf and had a decent experience. I booked the hotel through Hotwire on one of those mystery hotel deals, so got it for a pretty good price.

Our room was a good size, clean and comfortable. Staff were friendly enough (although the tour information guy they had there wasn't much help). Can't remember too much detail about it now, but I would be happy to stay there again at the right price.

If you can't get it on a good special though, could be on the expensive side for what it is.

Our friends stayed at holiday inn express and were extremely happy. Good size rooms and free breakfast!
We have stayed at the handlery union square, great location but rooms are smaller.

Thanks everyone.

I have booked a junior suite at the Holiday Inn Fishermans Wharf. It worked out a better price for a bigger room than the express.

Will still keep an eye out for other specials.
