Can someone give me a synopsis of these two?

Both of my children have put them as number 1 on the Christmas list? Not at all what I was expecting.

I would buy 1 as a combined gift and then just do stockings for each of them as it takes most of what I budgeted for individual gifts.

AFAIK, most of the games are available for both, except Halo series. DS got a PS3 years ago (came with our tv, so we gifted) he wanted the XBox for Halo. Even now, he is looking for XBox 1 for Master Chief.

If it Halo the XBox kid wants, they will never be satisfied with PS.

My DH has a PS4. It has better graphics than DS's Xbox. Not sure if that matters to your boys or not. I like the PS4. Not that I play video games but it also works at a Blu-Ray player for us and I watch my Hulu on it.

Long term price wise, I think the games are all pretty much the same cost. Online play is slightly cheaper for PS4 than Xbox but you can find Xbox deals that can make it cheaper. One thing DH likes about the PS4 online is they have different free games each month. I am not sure if the Xbox does that or not.

Both have their own unique games.

Xbox has the Halo series and Playstation has Little Big Planet.

I'm assuming they want one because their friends have them? I'm also assuming your kids are around the age of 5 - 10?

Since they are wanting an Xbox 1 I'm assuming there is a certain game they want / their friends have. That's why I asked about their age.

Break down - both require an online subscription in order to play the games online.

Both have motion sensing peripherals. Xbox has the Kinect and Playstation has the Eye.
I haven't had the chance to try out the updated Eye but the Kinect has definitely proven itself to be entertaining - especially for the young crowd.

Both have packages available with the without their motion sensing peripherals and you'll notice it mainly due to the price difference.

I think currently you can get a standalone Xbox1 for 349.99 and an Xbox1 W/ Kinect for 449.99

Playstation 4's are running at 399.99.

I'm sure the Holiday Bundles are out by now. They tend to include a game or two as well within each package. With the two being in a similar price range I would recommend getting them the Xbox1 like they requested.

I would definitely check about the games as well because Black Friday has some fairly decent prices going for standalone Xbox1's.

I think Walmart had a deal for a standalone Xbox1, the Halo collection, and a 30$ gift card for 329.99. Whereas the Xbox1 + Kinect is around 429.99 that weekend.

Feel free to PM me if there was something more specific you were looking for.

The PS4 is out selling the Xbox One by an absolutely huge margin.

They need to know what system their friends are getting, so they will be able to play together online.

Chances are, more of their friends are getting PS4s rather than Xbox Ones.

This is a huge investment and commitment, so be sure you are choosing the right one that is best for your kids and they will be happy with long term. Good luck!

girls ages 9 and almost 13. Main game is Minecraft. My husband thinks the PS 4 is the better buy but neither of us have kept up with gaming systems.

They really are equal, but different. If their friends have either system, you will want to buy the same one they have so they can play together.

The PS4 has ever-so-slightly better graphics, but their motion-sensing add-on isn't as good as XBox One. As someone else mentioned, certain games are "exclusive" to one system. Halo is Xbox...which they may not even care about.

They are both blu-Ray players. Not that you would necessarily be interested, but Xbox Live Gold (the online play subscription) has a fitness section with some free workouts. I've done a few of them. Both systems offer a free game now and then.

What really sets the XBox One apart from the PS4 is the multimedia features. You can use voice recognition when you're using it, such as "XBox record that" if you do something really cool/funny/unbelievable in a game, or "XBox pause" if you need to pause your movie or show. We use the latter a lot! There are tons of other voice key words to navigate you through Netflix, Hulu, etc. We use the voice recognition to pause/play a LOT so we don't have to fumble for the remote or controller. They sell a separate media remote which is awesome.

All in all, either system is nearly identical in terms of the ability to play games. There are only minor differences. I'm not sure about the PS4 prices for Black Friday since we aren't in the market for one, but there are lots of deals on XBox Ones for $329.99 I think with games.

If I get my son an xbox one, and all his friends have 360s, will they be able to play online together? Or do they all have to be on the same generation to play online together?

From my DS17, No,no no. That is why we just had to get the xbox one and keep the xbox 360. He has friends he plays with on both systems. He did say though, when you log online, you can see what system and game the friends are playing. You can send the friends messages , but cannot play with that friend if they are on a different system.

My 14 year old got the PS4 for his birthday. One of the main reasons was that his friends were getting play stations. He had been playing the xbox360 for a few years and liked it. Now, he mainly plays the ps4 but still has the xbox and plays it occasionally.

leaning towards xbox and looking at black Friday Target sale and Best Buy.

Target: 329.00 2 games and a 50 gift card. If I do get one online, is the gift card an electronic gift card or one that I could regift to someone else? (would still have to purchase an extra controller)

Best buy has xbox one with Kinect, extra controller, and 2 games (hubby could play these not appropriate for DD) for 429.99. Im thinking this is the better package its 100 more but includes the Kinect and extra controller.

What do you think the chances of getting one online? Does the sale online start a midnight? Or would I have a better chance of getting one going to the store (omg I can't imagine that).
