Always purchase the trip insurance.
I had the Allianz I think it is, with the cruise in the past, used travel safe with a Disney trip,
But never had to use them.

The cruise line has a $84 a person, I can buy for the entire family (4) for half that cost with Travel Safe online. What am I missing on buying it through the cruise line? We had an injury last year on the ship and they did the stitches, but the trip insurance would not cover once we left the ship to remove the stitches or address the issue of not enough skin to stitch too.

I want to buy the travel safe or travel guard the Disney trip, but hesitant I am not covered well enough for the cruise. We do not fly, we drive to port....
Health is good, just concerned of last minute health or other emergency getting the money back.

Cost is only $3,000-3,800.00 with add on unknowns.

You're going to have to look and compare the individual policies. What does one cover/provide versus the other? How much do you get back for "cancel anytime" coverage? The full amount (minus the insurance premium)? 80%? 75%? What do they cover as far as trip interruption, baggage loss, medical evacuation from the cruise?

We are using Travel Guard instead of RCI's insurance.

I have found that buying through insuremytrip provides equal, or better, coverage at a much lower cost . . PPs correct, you do need to read the policy.

YMMV, but I was amazed to learn that my CC has super-premium trip insurance as a "free benefit" provided you pay for the trip with said CC.

Might want to check your cards...

I am cruising on NCL this summer and took insurance through Insure My Trip dot com. NCL wanted about $180pp but Insure My Trip was $220 for both of us. Not sure about ever cruise line, but on NCL if we had to cancel we only would have gotten back something like 75 or 80% of what we paid and that would have been a credit to use on a future cruise. With Insure My Trip we get it all back. Also with Insure My Trip you get to pick the company and the type of plan you need/want. The offer multiple coverage leves from most if not all the companies.

Good advice. Many credit cards offer benefits that you might not be aware of.

I agree that you will probably pay less and get better coverage with choosing your own insurance coverage.

I'm not sure if cruise insurance covers independently purchased air. Trip insurance purchased independently is generally based on your age. Trip insurance purchased through the travel vendor isn't usually age rated. Cancel for any reason insurance can be somewhat expensive. People who want that coverage might be better off with cruise line coverage.

I agree with the PP. Most people can generally get a better deal if they shop. An exception. COSTCO sometimes has a great deal on insurance for travel booked through them.

We have successfully used AIG TravelGuard. It paid hostpital deductable, extra hotel nights, and additional airfare when my wife got sick in 2008 while at WDW. No problems getting paid either.

Their web site offers various coverages for a price and the detailed language is easy enough to understand.

Be certain to review the policy, regardless of where you buy it. Some cruise line insurance do not give a refund when you cancel after final payment . . . They issue a credit. Similarly, it isn't safe to assume that you can cancel for "any reason" and be covered by the cruise line insurance.

Thanks all for the advice. I didn't realize about the credit vs the refund. I have been looking around and pricing. I learned one or two things: the cruise line wanted the insurance before I made final payment. Second, the other sites some policies I am reading will not cover cancel for any reason policy after 10 days of first deposit. So if I made the deposit six months ago and did not pick up the plus policy before the ten days, I would not be eligible. I could purchase the plan that covered for a reason....within those reasons. Some plans if I didn't purchase within 21 days after deposit would not cover for pre-existing conditions, they would scrutinize the past medical conditions for anything like I would file a claim for.

I really just want something, no airfare if possible, and if injured, like broke a leg, or Heaven forbid something fatal happens or heart attacks.

I'll keep reading,
Thanks so much about the CC, I don't have any but traveling companion does.
