? about Ohanas. No eye-rolling allowed!

Haven't been to Ohana's YET. It is a definite, though. I, however, have been to restaurants that do the skewer thing. (Some Brazillian restaurants do it and it has a specific name.) Those places have done exactly what DisneyCowgirl wrote. They further had personal tongs at the table that you could use to touch your meat only to "catch" it off the skewer (this was like with a roast). (Ohana's should consider that.) They have been very careful and I hope Ohana's is too. BTW, my kids and their friends LOVE this type of restaurant. We took a bunch a few months ago and they still talk about it.
I am a complete germ-phobe, too. The creamer incident would have sent me over the edge. :earseek: I also HATE places that have bowls of food out for people, like nuts at a bar. That is SO gross. Someone uses their fingers to put food in their month and then puts their hand back in the bowl...YUCK! Just had to share that major pet peeve while on this topic.

We were just there on Mother's Day. The server had a couple of skewers each time, with different items on each. These were pulled off onto a small plate and then given to us. My son asked for an extra on something and they brought over a small plate of it, not the skewers. Everything was clean and GREAT!

We just ate there a couple weeks ago - a seperate small plate is used to de-skewer the meat.....

I'm pretty sure that's more common than you think. Realistically, most servers are going to swipe the closest unused whatever (ketchup, creamer, sugar) that you ask for off of the closest empty table. That's why I am such a big fan of the individually packaged cream, as long as they are kept cold enough and it's real cream. I've seen guests use their knives to "start" a ketchup bottle flowing. Yuck! You can't think about this stuff or you'll make yourself sick. When we're in WDW everyone washes their hands after they use the restrooms, the mousekeepers change our bedspreads and no little kids are peeing in the poool. :rolleyes1 Ahhh denial . . . it's so reliable.

If the skewer had touched another diners plate before yours, the skewer would be wiped clean as they push the food onto your plate :)

That's exactly what she doesn't want to happen!

We were there last Oct and the meats were put on separate clean plates. I will be returning on my upcoming trip and I am looking forward to it!!

Ewwww....you mean that other people get served from the same skewer? Even if that doesn't touch their plate...that still sounds kinda "ewwww."

I've never done Ohana's either so maybe it's not disgusting at all but now I'm worried 'cause we have Ohana's planned this vacation. *sigh*

my family is a big eww type of people and we did not have any problem when we were in O'hana.. no touching of plate and they CM are really good in handlind that skewers plus it goes to the pit if ever it touched which I think it did not the germ would be dead.

Alaska Catdog-LOL...I know! That is why I don't even bother to complain. I know when I was a foodserver at a busy restaurant, I would see customers complain about dirty silverware. Their server would just step into the kitchen, huff on the silverware and wipe it clean, and then return it to the guest. There is no telling what goes on in the back of the house, so I'd rather deal with the "devil I know" (reused creamer) than the "devil i do not know" (who knows what goes on in the ktichen with the same creamer?)

I just choose not to think about these things. Denial is a beautiful thing!

Have eaten at Ohana many times ..... love it. Never had a skewer touch my plate to my knowledge...never had the meat served on another plate but did see the small plates used to brace the skewers as the fork was used to push the meat towards the end, when it was placed above my plate and "slid" off.
Plan to be there our last night this trip as well....wouldn't miss it.

We have been to Brazilian "churrascarias" and are big fans. We notice the wait staff is extra attentive about things like cleanliness. We were also really struck by how the waiters were CONSTANTLY bringing more food! DH's one wish on our next trip is to eat at Ohana, so we hope it doesn't disappoint!

We go there on every trip and have PS's for two different nights this trip, only 5 day to go :cool1: , anyhow I don't recall any skewers touching my plate and I do remember the little plate they used to brace the skewers. Go!! You'll love it!!

Thank you all for your replies, and for not making fun of me!

This is what planted the whole thought in my head: It's a picture that someone posted on another thread:

http://www.wdwfood.com/gallery/ohana/serverfood

In it, I could clearly see that the server was resting those skewers on a plate, but it looks like exactly what DisneyCowGirl said - that it's a smaller plate that he carried around with him.

I am relieved! Does anyone else remember a little plate being carried around by the server?

Betty

The picture is not touching the person's dinner plate it's touch the little side "bread plate" that the servers bring over as the PP had mentioned.

Can't wait to eat at Ohana's this Wednesday!!! The servers do carry around a small dish, the same size my dd's small scoop of ice cream was in, when the serve the meat. They rest the tip of the skewers in this plate to get the meat towards the end of the skewer and then they "fall" onto your plate.
