We already have MB from our previous trip back in October.

Is it really necessary to get a new set? or do they just do this in case we want to change the color?

I see no use in getting a new set for each of our upcoming trips we booked. Seems like a waste of money to me. We were told they were good for 2 years and they can just activate them again when we come back....am I right on this?

I think the intention was always that Magic Bands could (and would) be reused but currently you will be asked to choose new Magic Bands for each separate resort stay (including if you are doing a split stay). If you don't choose to personalise them, you will just be issued with the standard grey bands at check-in but they will be issued regardless so you may as well use the opportunity to get different colours if you so wish.

You will be issued a new set of bands for your upcoming trip.
That's how Disney has chosen to do it, at this time.

You can choose to use the new set or your current set.
Either will work.

It does seem like a waste of money, but that is the way they are choosing to do it for now.
