 Ok my 3 year old daughter is normally excellant at taking medicine, honestly hasn't found a medicine she didn't like until now:(

We found out in November that she is allergic to pennicillan.

Well she has an infection and was prescribed Cleocin (this stuff smells horrible and tastes horrible) She by the way loved amoxicillan too bad she got a yeast infection and diaper rash from that stuff.

We have tried a few things-

#1- Went to the pharmacy and had them add Flavor to it. They looked it up in their book and found that the only things that can cover the smell are orange oil or lemon oil. So I decided to pick the flavor Orange Creamcilcle, yummy right? It smells great! YAy she is gonna have to take this...WRONG! Spits it everywhere and the pukes. :crazy2:

#2- I hate it but hey I was told it worked for me..Sat on her pinned her arms inside, held her nose, nope puked all over, spit it up. (I think my Mom cursed me, she said I was the exact same way when it came to medicine, Karma sucks)

#3- Went and bought the little syringe type medicine dropper thought it would work by some what forcing it down her throat--WRONG AGAIN!

So anyone else have any tricks for us to use? I'm so at my wits end with this, she needs this medicine, she has an infection she could get sicker without it. I've honestly considered calling her doctor to see if there was any way to do amoxicillan and set up some sort of preventative measures for the allergy..but I in no way want to make her any sicker. I;'m so worried we will end up in the hospital because she won't take the mediine.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

TIA,

Charity Lynn

Have her suck on a popsicle or small ice cube, or even eat some ice cream. Anything really, really cold. THEN give her the medicine. The cold numbs the taste buds. This little trick is the only thing that works for my dd, who hates taking any kind of medicine.

Why didn't the doctor prescribe amoxicillin? Is she allergic to it as well or is it just because of the diaper rash? It seems to me that any antibiotic could cause diaper rash and yeast infection because it kills both the bad and the good bacteria, which in turn causes the rash/infeciton. If she can take amoxicillin, I would ask to have the RX changed.

Does the medicine come in pill form? Maybe she could tolerate that if you crushed it up and put it in a spoonful of sugar.

Finally, I am not one to really talk. I had and still have a devil of a time getting my 5 year old to take anything. It's a good thing she is healthy most of the time. I can remember doing the same things and getting puked all over when she was little too. We ended up putting it in her apple juice - which I don't recommend. But my babysitter seemed to get her to take the medicine o.k. Is there someone else who might be able to get her to take it better?

Good luck!

I'd first try putting in in applesauce, or pudding - something you know she loves & will hide the flavor a little. She has to eat the whole serving, though...and sometimes that's the hard part.

I also had a DD that was a BEAR to get meds into. She got really sick & dehydrated one time that I had to use suppositories to get her fever down. After that, all I had to do was mention that I needed to get one of those out of the cabinet & she'd open wide & swallow whatever I gave her!!

I wonder if there are chewables that she could have instead of the liquid. Those made my DD feel more like a big girl, and they are easier to dose ;) .

Get one of the baby bottle nipples that has the big X cut into it (dd is 14 now, I can't remember the name of the nipples.). Have her lay on her back, pour the dose of meds into the nipple. Then have her suck the medicine out of the nipple. That always worked with my dd because the medicine went so far back in her thoat that she swallowed before she could taste it.
