I need help this trip will only be the 2nd time I have ever flown in my life:eek:and the first time I have ever booked my own flights, so my questions is this: I have been looking for flights almost every day and I can't find good times to fly, can I book our going down flight with one airline and then book our return trip with another airline? That is the only way I can find decent times cheap enough. Thank you! Any hints, tips, or suggestions. I am really stressed about this because, everytime I talk to someone about my trip they say "What do you mean you haven't booked your flight yet!"

YES! If 2 separate one way tickets (same airline or not) are cheaper than 1 round trip ticket then go for it!

(ETA: If you want to post your specifics, airports and dates and preferred times, I'd be happy to help you find the best deal.)

I hope you are using something like www.kayak.com which does not sell tickets but just lists flights and prices. And where are you flying from. Sometimes you can save a ton of money by driving two or three hours to another airport.
