At 47 I was a little surprised to get an offer for an AARP card in the mail, BUT, since I'm always looking for a travel bargain I wasn't offended! I have AAA, I have rental car memberships, I even have an entertainment book this year! Is there any advantage to joining AARP for travel discounts beyond what I can already access? Hotel rooms, rental cars, park passes, SWA tickets...those are our travel needs in a nutshell! Thanks!!!! :3dglasses

I often use the AARP codes for rental cars. The price is competitive, it usually includes a free additional driver (which is in addition to any other free additional driver you receive through programs such as Emerald Club) and a Maximum Responsibility Cap of $5,000 for damages to the rental car if you decline the collision / loss / damage waiver.

I also find that sometimes AARP rates are better at hotels than AAA rates. -- Suzanne

Does the application card ask for your birthday? I thought you had to be 50 to join.

I thought that you had to be 50 also. Is your husband 50?

Hmmm. No, the husband is younger. It's in my name...no reference to my birth date. Cards are included in the mailing. Hmmmm. Oh wait, in red it refers to "if you are over 50"...ohhhh...psych. Well, something to look forward to I suppose...

I got mine and used it when I was 49-no problems just showed the card. I used mine for hotel discounts, more than paid for the meembership

hmmmm....I may have to look into this if no birthdate is required to join.
I am sure once you have the card, merchandisers do not ask to also see proof of age.

no they don't - i get senior discounts on all kinds of stuff including ice cream! i just show them the card and thats that - if they ask, i just tell them the truth: i'm on my moms aarp card as her "spouse". they just laugh and honor it.

Oh, that is a good idea too. Thank you.

I turn 47 Sunday. It makes me feel so much older now that I am almost in the "AARP Years" :(

I've been wondering the same thing...up until my 50th birthday (end of Sept) our AARP mail was just addressed to "Resident" but now that I am officially 50 my husband makes jokes that the AARP mail is addressed in my name (he's younger so I guess he can do that lol). We also have AAA and the Ent book, plus I belong to Working Advantage through my job, so it make take some effort to see where the best discounts are for things.
