I was doing well with the e-file business until I got to the State..... I chose to e-file federal and state together. Federal is all filled out and ready to go. Filled out state, the program did its thing in checking for errors and whoops - it found this one:

"You may not enter two state withholdings for the same state postal abbreviation on a single form (W-2 Copy 2). If this is correct, you must file your return on paper"

This is the third year I've e-filed, never had a problem before, both of us have lived and worked in same state all three years.

The only thing I can figure is that my husband works in Ohio, but his paycheck and W-2 employer address shows Kentucky.

I have gone through all the information asked for and input regarding the W-2 information, and can't for the life of me figure out what the problem is!

Help, please!

There should be a way to ask them. I file on line with turbotax and they have a place you cana sk questions.

Near as I can determine jamsmom - they want to charge me $19.95 to answer my question! It's TaxCut by H&R Block. I've already paid $25 for the Federal and $25 for the State! I've done a "search" in the program, but found nothing relating to this problem.

There has got to be a Tax-knowledgeable DISer out there who can help me!

I probably have no clue what I'm talking about. That said:

"You may not enter two state withholdings for the same state postal abbreviation on a single form (W-2 Copy 2). If this is correct, you must file your return on paper"

This sounds like you may have entered the info from multiple W-2s onto a single form. I would check my work. Make sure that each W-2 has been entered separately.

dandave - I just checked my form and I have each of our W-2's entered correctly - one for my husband, one for me.

Thanks for the thought, though!

Have you tried deleting the second copy of the W2 and then redoing it?

Thank you for your suggestions, everyone. I think I finally worked through it.

Alex - your note is what made me really examine the e-filing AND our W-2's.

the problem was with my W-2 - the local school income tax to be exact. On my W-2, the school district wages is listed under box 16, (state wages, tips, etc.) and the withheld amt. is listed under 17. State income tax.

On my husband's W-2. his wages for the school are listed under 18, and the tax listed under 19. with the locality name last.

I changed my e-filed W-2 info location to match his - and it worked! He works for a large company - they have their information in order. I work for a small city, and let's just say with some people there, there's a lot to be desired at times!

this whole episode didn't help my argument FOR e-filing with my husband!
