We are heading down to WDW next Sat.morning. Now we are facing an unknown problem with my oldest DD! :sad2:

Jeana has worn contacts for more than a year. She went to the eye dr. in Sept., got her vision checked and got her 6 month supply of contacts. All was well. Well, after she opened the boxes of contacts (the doctor gave her the first pair - montly lenses), shortly thereafter, she began to complain about them. They just didn't seem right. She actually opened a second pair out the box....same problem. Last week, she is complaining so loudly that she said she was actually ready to go back to glasses full time. I knew something was up. I called the eye doctor, and they asked me to bring in her contacts...they wanted to be sure everything was ok. She also was brought in and they checked out her eyes. Well, her one eye (the one that was bugging her in the new lenses), was swollen and irrated. He told her not to wear her contacts for a week. We went back yesterday. Well, the swelling is down, her eye looks perfectly healthy...but she still can't see right out of it! The doctor said she has a severe decrease in vision out of that eye (described it as waking up one day and finding your shoe size went from a 7 to a 9 overnight). They could see NOTHING wrong...and they did all kinds of tests in the office. We are now being sent to a specialist (an opthomologist that would specialize in retinal diseases). The doctor thinks there is something interferring with the nerves behind her eye.

I am so worried, but don't want to let it on to my daughter and have her become scared. With this being a holiday, I doubt I am going to be able to get her in to see anyone this week. Then with vacation at the end of next week...............no pressure here is there???

Has anyone had ANYTHING like this happen??

Prayers and pixie dust much appreciated!! :sad1:

No ideas as to what this could be, but I am sending some good thoughts and pixie dust your way.

I am older than your daughter. But about 5 years ago one of my eyes was out of focus with my new glasses. When I saw my Eye Dr. he checked if the Rx was correct, if they filled the glasses correctly etc. Everything was fine, but my sight was not. He then called a specialist to see me. I saw him about 2 hours later. They were worried it was my retina. He put in the dye and checked out the eye. All was great. They concluded that my last prescription was too powerful and my eyes were now having a hard time adjusting to my new Rx. Over the next few weeks my eye went back to normal. All has been fine since.

I have!!!

I had some mild pain and swelling in my lymph nodes, a little chest cold, nothing major. But my eyes started getting very, very painful with my contacts - one more so than the other. The vision also got very bad in one eye even with glasses. I went to see the eye doctor. I had (have) excessively dry eyes and he said I had a virus in the lining of my eyes. I had NEVER heard of this before. He gave me OTC ointment to put in at night for the dryness and prednisone drops to put in a few times a day for a few weeks. The pain went away immediately, but it took a while for the vision to get better. It was just blurry and very annoying. The size 7 to 9 analogy sounds exactly like that. My eye doctor said it was normal, keep taking the prednisone and it would get better. It did.

I had it happen again a week or so ago. Same thing, mild virus in lining of eyes. I used the pred a couple times and some simple rewetting drops and all was well.

I hope this is the same thing with your daughter...!!! Does she feel mildy sick at all? And I do mean mild. I wasn't even sick enough for cold medicine.

eta - I hope this is the case with your DD, because it is minor and very easily corrected, not because I hope she has a virus... ;)

Wow! That's a bummer!! I sure hope you can get it resolved in time for your trip..

Are you heading down on Dec.2nd? That's when we'll be arriving too! :)

Well, she was slightly sick about a week or so ago. She was complaining of a tightening in her chest, like the start of a chest cold. She also had swollen glands and a sore throat. I think this was around the time she switched her contacts.

What is odd though is that according to her eye doctor said there was nothing unusual with her eyes themselves. If they didn't know she couldn't see out of them, they wouldn't know she was having a problem. I would imagine a virus would show something, wouldn't it?? :confused3

Some physicians won't take a chance with anything as far as trying to treat it themselves (some cases a good idea). Having a specialist look at it leaves your physician with no responsibility, unfortunately for the patient a lot of the time it leaves them with a feeling of concern and no treatment or answer.

Have you thought of taking her to the hospital and having it checked? They may move a little quicker on things.

Well, I was finally able to find the specialist in our area. Let me tell you, insurances are a pain in the tush to deal with. I couldn't pull up any specific information from their listing of optomotrists so I had to call, one by one, to find one that would meet our needs. She has an appointment Tues. morning (seeing that it is a holiday weekend, I was expecting a longer wait). I called the eye doctor, told them where we are going, and they are faxing her file over to the new doctor so everything will be ready for them - he'll be able to see what tests he has run and we won't have to go through repeats.

Keep the pixie dust coming! :bounce:

Glad to hear you were able to get her in so soon. I will continue to keep her in my thoughts.

Good luck!!!

I actually switched eye doctors several years ago because my optometrist was pretty much only good for prescriptions and nothing beyond. I went to see him after my son was born and he found cotton wool spots (don't ask - I know it sounds bizarre) in both of my eyes and insisted it was because of my gestational diabetic condition and high sugars. Since I knew exactly what my sugars had been during my pregnancy, and had a healthy 6 1/2 pound baby boy to boot, I knew he was wrong. He pretty much told me I had to see an opthamologist and was in the beginning stages of major eye disease. Please keep in mind that this man was a friend of the family and KNEW I had just had a baby by C-section 3 weeks previous to this visit.

Fast forward to opthamologist. He took one look at my DS in his carseat and my diagnosis and asked, "did you have high blood pressure/pre-eclampsia?" I had. Turns out the cotton wool spots were completely normal as a side effect and had already begun disappearing. I bumped into the optometrist a few weeks later and he asked how things had gone. I told him and he said "Oh! Of course! I didn't even think of that..."

Since then I have been seeing an optometrist in my opthamologists office and have been really happy. I think sometimes the optometrists specialize in contacts/glasses and don't really want to get into diseases. Good luck with the doctor - I hope it's something really simple...! I had my DH read your OP and he laughed and said, "wow! Sounds familiar!!"

:grouphug:

(PS - the virus was in the lining of the eye - not anything deeper...good luck and pixie dust!!!)
