Well, I'm supposed to go home for labor day weekend; however, the flight costs are outrageous - about $900 for dh and I. The most I've ever spent before was about $500 total. Any cheaper websites? I've tried hotwire, expedia, travelocity and even the flight's own websites. And pls don't say drive, b/c we can't bc of anxiety issues. Thanks!

Maybe if you tell us where home is and where you are flying out of- some of the Diser's can help? :goodvibes

Albany, NY to Roanoke, VA. leaving Friday and returning monday - but will work around thursday and tuesday to if a significant difference in savings.

Have you tried www.sidestep.com or www.kayak.com? Although I just searched Sidestep for you with both a Friday departure and Monday return and Thursday departure and Tuesday return and got a fare of $438/person. Sorry! Hope you are able to find something.

Try prices into Greensboro, NC. GSO It is just about 1.5 hrs from Roanoke. Fare are always better into Greensboro than Rke. Also try Charlottesville and Lynchburg. You likely won't get much difference into those smaller airports but sometimes you might hit on some sort of sale. You can try the same things from the origin airport. Aren't there a few within an hour or so from Albany? Play around with those. Also try Northwest. They fly into ROA but I don't know if they leave Albany.

It is the time you're flying, I have a sinking feeling you won't find too much better than what you've already discovered :(.

Oh. that's a toughie, two small airports. I think you may have waited too late. Orbitz shows a $398 per person with TWO plane changes on the way home...Other then that it's over $400 a person.

I think you options may be to pay or just stay home.

Or if you were planning on renting a car when in Roanoke anyway, you might try Washington DC Dulles airport, United has non stops for $327 per person. It's 177 miles from Roanoke though, so I'd guess about a 3 hour drive (more in heavy trafic).

Otherwise the best I found was around $450 or so. Sorry!

Go to Travelocity and search for flights from NYC to Roanoke (assuming you can take a car from our state's great capital to our state's great city). It's only $368.40 for 2 tickets through Northwest Airlines with a lay off in Detroit and it's for a Tuesday arrival. Goodluck.

BTW, first post, just for you!

I think that deserves an emoticon ...

normally, I would agree but we always go labor day weekend and have NEVER paid these prices. last year, we flew for about $450-500 total - now it's almost doubled!

And when did you book??? Cheaper airfares were out there, but not 45 days out for a holiday weekend.

How far is Roanoke from Norfolk VA? I think that Southwest flies that route...would that work? Southwest has roundtrip for Labor Day weekend (Fri-Mon) for $142/pp each way...still over $600 with taxes, but better than $400.

Good luck!

I looked at Southwest too, for norfolk as well, but it looks like Burkelands got an even better deal!

Welcome to the DIS Burke! Here are two smilies! :cool1:

Way to go Burkelands! Your very first post on the Dis...and it was to help out someone else! A big hello and a hearty welcome to you. I hope your post will be the first of many...and that someday I or some other fellow diser will be able to help you with something you need or want to know.

Airtran LaGuardia to Norfolk is $298.20 RT for 2 people but that is for a thursday departure and a Tuesday return.

Also Airtran White Plains to Richmond 2 people same dates $458.40

Norfolk isn't really close. It is about 4 hours.

If you can get to NYC easily, Expedia is showing $224 into Roanoke for Friday to Monday. They have selections from JFK or LGA at that price.
