It does work quite well most of the time outside of the PM commute weekday hours.
Even better, you can eliminate one of the two tolls without too much trouble: Leaving the airport north exit, go left at the first light, curve to left, about a mile is next light where you take two lefts to get on the Beeline (new name is Beach Line) Westbound. Then to I-4 west and that takes you to the Epcot area or wherever else in WDW you want to go.
I think the best way to Boardwalk Villas is, from I-4 take the Epcot exit, then take its second exit, a cloverleaf. Now you are on Buena Vista, fourth light is Boardwalk on the right (MGM studios on the left).
Returning to airport via I-4 east, skip past Seaworld and get back on Beach Line which is route 528, then get off at its exit 9 Tradeport. Left and cross under, gas station to top off at is right there. Don't cross back under but instead get into middle lane (facing north), required right onto McCoy, and airport is just over a mile.
I'd rather pay the tolls on 417. I take the South Exit from the airport and then get on 417. I need $2.50 in change (two $1 tolls and 50 cents at exit), get off at Osceola Parkway, and then follow the signs for Epcot Area resorts.

ITA!!!!! I4 can be a nightmare anytime of day. One accident and you are stuck.
I get off at the exit before Osceola, tolls 2.00. It dumps you on 536 and I just follow that to the Boardwalk area exit.
