A wig in a race?

Anyone ever run wearing a wig? I am thinking like half marathon distance.

How was it? How did you keep it on? Or did you toss it?

I know I could practice wearing one outside...but right now I am going to say 'nay' to that. Of course I could practice wearing one on a treadmill but that's not quite the same.

I think you need to wear it outside in the same weather you expect to run you race before the race at a longer distance. The head sheds 60-75% of the heat from the body and covering it with a synthetic material can easily be a recipe for disaster. As a coach I would not recommend, as a friend I would say go for it but make a deal with yourself so that is is OK to toss as soon as you feel the need.

Pretty much cewait said. Plus some additional advice. When my wait was lower I used to cosplay for conventions and such. I used a wig once and then decided I would make do from then on out. I had to abandon that quickly because those things retain a lot of heat. And that's just walking around in one.

I know I've seen maybe a handful of runners do the wig thing before but I would approach this with caution. Get a good quality wig and make sure you do a few test runs outdoors before you consider doing a race with it.

Thanks.

Maybe I should consider it for a 5k at best. It sounded like a good idea, sort of.
My other option would be to do a temp dye in my hair!

I dressed as Merida for Princess half. Knowing a full on wig would be way too hot for me, (I get super hot when I run) I attached curling ribbon to a crochet headband 75% of the way around (leaving the neck open). I pulled it back on the sides and secured with a clip to hide my dark hair. I also wore a larger knit headband and bobbi pinned it on the sides to hold it. I lasted all 13.1 miles with it on  although I dumped water on my head throughout the run, but I do that anyways.

I wore one for the half at DL and at WDW a few years ago. Very hot & sweaty, as has been mentioned, and that takes some getting used to. On the plus side, when the wig is neon blue as mine was, you're pretty easy to spot in pictures. Wearing one also makes you a target for people who insist they're not going to get beat by the guy with blue hair, pink tutu, and a tiara.

Do either of you have pics of these??

Here's a couple
I thought I might have to use a hat if it rained, but ended up going hatless...

I was just going to mention this option. Were you on the Boardwalk bus by any chance? I sat across from someone who had a red curling ribbon wig!!

Very cool! Did you attach the ribbon to the headband with a hot glue gun...its a very clever idea :thumbsup2 and something I will consider doing. I have plenty of time to plan this!

You certainly were a running landmark in a race!

My idea for this race is something like that ... a crazy colored wig like BRIGHT green or BRIGHT pink...and then some crazy face paint. Lord knows what I am in for.

I do like the idea of gluing ribbons around a headband though....

BTW what or who were you dressed as?

Awesome! It looked great and I really loved the idea!! I thought about it later during the trip and wondered how it held up in the race.

I was in the row behind you across the aisle...the lady miscounted when we were boarding the bus and my husband ended up having to stand up the whole time (better him than me ;) ).

Nope no glue involved" I used a stretch crochet headband, you can buy them at Walmart. They are mostly used for babies with big bows or flowers attached to them. All I did was cut the ribbon double the length I needed and tie it through the holes. It was easy and I did at all at my daughters practice over 2 nights.after it was tied on, I went back through and curled. If you want close ups of how it attached, let me know. :)

It held up great, to my surprise. I thought it would end up a straggly mess, but curls bounced up with the humidity. :confused3

If you don't mind I would love to see closeups.

I am thinking of something with real cheap Christmas style tinsel in it. I want to look really gaudy.

That Merida wig is awesome- what a good idea! It probably held up better with the running/heat than a real wig would have too!
