A warning to all our DIS friends

Until I get something more sophisticated, I just copy them all to DVD's (it takes a few of them, but it's worth it) and keep the DVD's locked in my desk at work. That way, they are separate from my house where the computer lives. I also keep a set at home in case of harddrive failure. DVD's are cheap, and it doesn't take *that* much time!

By the way, scarlett873, I believe it's only the first backup that takes so long. After that, they only backup what changes, so it should go much quicker.

You should back up your photos to two places. I wish I was as organized in real life as I am with backing up my photos.

I can't tell you the number of people I used to talk with that never backed up their computer. I also could tell you stories of people that kept all their images on their memory card. They would come up to me with shoeboxes full of memory cards. They never backed them up and kept buying new memory cards.

You should also keep up with technology. If you saved all your images on a 5 1/4 floppy how many people could read those images now? If you saved them on CD's you should reburn to new CD's every 4-5 years. You should also think about putting them on DVD's.

Sure you can buy old technology but why not stay up to date? Another good idea is to print out many of your photos. Do you remember those photos you have of loved ones, what is your family going to do when it can't see your images? Print out the good ones, make a picture book but share your photos so they can live on after you are gone.

I also put my photos on different sites for free. I print new ones just enough to keep the photos safe online. I also back them up on Cd's.

I have a two pronged backup strategy:
1. Backup online to Backblaze. Same thing as Carbonite, not sure if there really is any difference, I just got Backblaze first. For those worried about security, you can use military grade encryption so that only you can unlock your files. Also, the great thing about Backblaze is that you can backup things incrementally so if you change a file and save it, you can go back to an hour ago, a day ago, etc, assuming you were connected to the internet and it backed up.
2. I also use a Time Capsule as my router and external time machine hard drive. It is very convenient to have it constantly backing up without having to plug my wife's and my own macbooks in to an external drive to backup.

My current set up is Windows Home Server (will work with Macs as well) and carbonite. Off site protects me from fire/theft and it is mainly backups of pictures & videos.

I have had this happen in the past now I back up all my photos mutiple times. Also another note when transferring photos to computer make sure that they actually transferred and are backed up before wiping the SD card. I lost some wonderful photos this past August because i failed to do this. I have also bought several extra SD cards so I don't feel compelled to make space by erasing photos from my card again.

YEP!! 64 GB of photos is would get me about a month or two of shots, that is a lot of flash drives. Sidenote, don't count on flash drives for permanent back up. They are easily lost and I've repaired many of them from data loss. They just are too portable and take too much abuse to be considered a safe backup media.
