This scam almost happened to me, and I wanted to pass the info along.
I always put a mail hold on my mail while on vacation at the post office's online site. I clicked onto my home town, state, post office site and clicked on it. Everything seemed legit until I got to a request for my credit card # for the "one time only" charge of $4.99 for the PO to check that I was legit(or the real one requesting mail hold).
At that point, I said, Whoa,.....That's not right. I've always used online mail hold without problems. I always connected with the official PO site for our town.
I suspected it was a scam right away; however, it certainly asked the same questions as the PO and looked the same as the PO site. So it would be easy for someone to just go ahead and give them their CC # and not think much about it.
I went to our post office and told the clerk. He said it was definitely a scam and that the PO does not charge for mail hold. He also said that even if I had tried the official US gov PO site, those scam sites will still show up.
So, I wanted to forewarn others who may not be aware of this scam. Honestly, it looked so legit that I almost fell for it.
