A warning about Alamo

I booked my flights and rental car through NW World Vacations and prepaid my rental car with Alamo. We are leaving next Sunday and I tried to pull up my reservation on Alamo's site and it tells me there is none. So I call and they can see it but since I booked with a tour operator (ie: NW Vacations, MLT,....) you cannot do an online check in and have to stand in line. I had no idea of this and choose Alamo because of the online check-in. I know that I should have listened to my gut and just went with Budget. I never have any problems with them.

So just a warning to everyone who books with a company. You cannot do online check-in.

Had you booked separately with Alamo you could have pulled up your res. Had the tour operator booked you with Budget you wouldn't be able to pull up your reservation either. That's just the way it works when you book through a tour operator and sometimes even effects your ability to pull up airline reservations too. As long as you know the reservation is there then don't fret too much. "Advance Check-in" for car rentals is not that big of a deal. It's too late to join Quick Silver, Alamo's guest program, but it includes similar advance booking information being in your reservation.

The reason for this is that tour operators pay the car rental by giving you a voucher that you have to turn over to the rental station. All advance- checkin-type transactions must be done via credit card.

But what if it is a prepay? I had already paid for it on my credit card so that should not be an issue should it?

Good luck waiting in line. Last time we made our reservation with alamo, we got stuck in line for over an hour....and that was at 11:00 at night. We didnt get to our room until after 1:00 a.m.

Be prepared.

I had the travel agent switch me to National. I am a Emerald Isle member so that should work out much better! :thumbsup2 I went with Alamo to save some money but for $88.00 more, I could just go National and not bother with the mess of lines.

Yep. That happened to me. A couple of years back the company I worked for booked our staff to fly out of Syracuse to MI for a few days for training. They switched my first and last names on the airline ticket. All the airline could do was put a note on the computer. I couldn't fix it until I was physically in the airport for check-in because I was booked through a tour operator as part of a group ressie.
