A tipping question

My family will be taking a towncar service from the airport to the WL in August. How much do you customarily tip the driver? There will be 4 of us but most likely only 2 suitcases (possibly 3). I'm not sure if I tip by charge (i.e. 15% of total) or like you do a bellhop or mousekeeping (i.e $1/bag or $1/person). If it's by charge, then what do I do on the return trip, since we'll be paying up front on the arrival trip?

Just curious how all of you handle that situation.

TIA,
Colete

Which Towncar service are you using? Most of them include the tip in the price. I'd check the website and make sure...

OKay, maybe I'm wrong I just checked the one we are using. I could have sworn I read that the tip was included...

I've heard many here say that they tip $10 each way. In case they don't get the same driver on the return trip.

That's what our family does...although I admit, my husband loves good service so if we get an exceptional driver, he'll tip $20 one way. That's what a tips for isn't it

I didn't see anything on Tiffany about tip being included. I was thinking somewhere between 7 and 10 each way, depending on how the service goes. $7 each way is about 20% for us since we have a coupon from our Passporter book. Is that too little? Too much?

Oh well, I must have been dreaming it. I feel so foolish.

That being said, I'd probably tip between $7 and $10 each way. It just depends on the service...better service better tip.

The majority of the threads I've read about this is $10 each way since the driver may not be the same. HTH!;)

We're using Tiffany Town Car service.

JDY - don't feel bad - I thought I read it at a companie's website too (must not have been Tiffany!). I sent Tiffany an email asking if the service was taxable. The message back said that transportation wasn't taxable, but nicely reminded me that the price did NOT include driver's tip.

Just trying to keep all my ducks in a row & make sure I have the tip & payment envelopes ready.

Thanks so much !!!

Colette (who's slowly going nuts with anticipation....:Pinkbounc - I love to watch that trip counter count down!!!!)

I think some companies include the tip if you rent a full size limo or van.

I always tipped $10 each way when we used Tiffany. We got great service, I figured the driver had to wait for us in baggage claim, helped with the luggage out to the curb, so he deserved more than a cab driver.

Tiffany doesn't include the tip when you rent a van. And Yourride doesn't include the tip when you rent a limo.

I generally tip $10 each way for a towncar, $15 each way for a van or limo.

Guess I am cheap, I only plan on tipping about $5 each way (about 12.5%) depending on the service. I thinking tipping has gotten way out of hand. It seems everyone wants a tip these days.

Happy Limo will automatically charge you $10 extra each way as tip for driver.

So I guess $10 is the norm.

I'm probably going with Yourride... Does anyone know if they include the tip? It doesn't say on their website, so I just thought they didn't. I was planning on $10 each way also, even though there will be only 2 of us (that boils down to $5 each) and I'm assuming we'll only have 2 (huge) pieces of luggage, plus our own carry on's......

Hi Jeanny,

We used Yourride last November. No, the tip is not included and we did tip $10.00 each way. From what I read here, that seems to be pretty standard.

Have a great time!

thanks SoccerMom

from reading the boards, I figured that was about the average tip. The way I look at it is- they're doing the driving and hefting my luggage in and out of the car, and I get to sit back and enjoy the pampering! I don't have to worry about the traffic, I don't have to worry about the road construction, I don't have to read any maps and try to figure out how to get to CBR.... I don't have to worry about a thing, I'll be on vacation, they've earned the $10 :)
