A thank you note question

My uncle (Mother's BIL) lost his job recently and him and my Aunt are really struggling financially.

However, they gave me a VERY generous amount of money for my 21st bday present. The amount was surprising anyway, but especially because my uncle lost his job (they are not wealthy people anyway).

When I write their thank you card, do you think I should mention that I was so touched that they would give me this gift despite their situation?

Or perhaps say thank you for the gift and I hope things improve for them soon?

Or would it be best to not mention the situation at all? I don't want to seem condecending or patronising, especially as they are my 'elders'. But I don't want to ignore what a huge sacrifice that amount of money must have been.

I personally wouldn't mention their financial hardships, just send a sincere note of gratitude.

Here's how I look at it: I have an Aunt and Uncle (sometimes cash-strapped, sometimes not) who have always given me very generous cash gifts for big events, and my Aunt is always buying lunch, and when we go shopping, she has to buy something for me. I have told her before that it was too much, that I really appreciate it, but I didn't feel they needed to do so much, and she told me that she does it because her aunt did it for her...and she hopes that I will one day do it for my nieces and nephews. So now I smile and accept their gifts, looking forward to when I am able to do it for my nieces and nephews.

A nice thank you note would be "thank you for your generous gift" and a note that you will pass on their kindness and generousity to someone else. I wouldn't mention their situation either.

I totally agree with this. I would just send my thanks to them.

I agree with the others. DO NOT mention their financial situation (which is none of your business anyway.) Just write a sincere thank you note and leave it at that.
