A Tale of [family madness in] Two Cities - Final Thoughts & PTR Link!

Great updates!! The pictures of New Orleans are amazing and fantastic. The wedding looked wonderful, everyone was having such a great time. I love the pants picture of Henry that is adorable!

Henry tried to put on his pants all by himself again yesterday - same situation! He's getting better at it though, he's gotten it a couple times by himself.

New Orleans looks beautiful! Thank you for all the great pictures. I guess I have to put it on my list of places I want to visit if DH and I ever get on our long planned vacation in the US...

It really is a beautiful City! We didn't hardly even leave the French Quarter and I know there is a lot more to see. What else is on your list for the US trip?

New Orleans and that wedding looked great! Well done Henry for sleeping through the ceremony and waking up in time to party :thumbsup2

It was perfect! I couldn't believe he slept through the music in the ceremony because it was looooooud. I was so glad he did though!

I just knew you would get great shots around New Orleans! You really captured the feel of the city with them!!!

Cool spoon rest! I really like it!

The wedding and reception look like so much fun!!! I love that the wedding procession walked down to the reception with jazz music playing! So neat! The food sounds delicious!!!

I really tried to get all sorts of angles of the buildings, and to capture the feeling - I'm glad they seem to do just that, I was never quite satisfied....

The wedding was a blast! The jazz band leading us down the street was so much fun - everyone on the sidewalks was watching and shouting with us/taking pictures. I bet the bride and groom felt like celebrities!

It sounds like it was a truly lovely wedding with lots of fun. I love weddings like that. They just make you happy.

I can't get over how beautiful New Orleans is!

It did make us happy! We were all grinning ear to ear. Henry enjoyed it all and so did we.

New Orleans is really amazing. The buildings are so unique - and most of it has been preserved very well!

Brooke -

You are an updating fiend! Why didn't I read all these updates over the weekend. What is WRONG with me??????? Now I can't see a single picture and I am frustrated beyond belief. But at least I have something to look forward to when I get home tonight.

About SWA - they used to let all the parents with kids under 6 board first specifically to prevent that jam up. But then they started the business class thing and paying for the early boarding. I think it screwed everything up. One thing I always knew was that there weren't going to be any kids anywhere near me on one of their flights, because they had all boarded while I was still in the bathroom. (not that I don't like little kids - I had two, but they cry, come with lots of equipment, and can get generally disruptive at times - capeesh?)

During my last SWA flight all the kids were sitting all around me and I thought, "How the heck did this happen?" So I can understand your frustration. You should have been up in the front of the plane to get settled. Once you are settled, everyone else comes in.

Still in all, I like SWA. And I am really glad they found Joe's phone. what a fiasco that would have been!

:rotfl: Capeesh!!!!!!!!!! I so understand. When you get past that stage in life, why oh why would you want to be back to it? Little kid kicking your seat, clawing at you with their grubby hands while they shift around in the seat 973 times...I get it! I look forward to being done with those days! I'll miss him being little, but some of it I won't miss!

That stinks that they changed their process. I wonder if they get a lot of complaints about it?

I was SO glad they found his phone....it would have been awful with work. And then he's out a phone for a while until IT can replace it-which was a HUGE problem at his old job since he was the only person who did his job!

So how excactly does SW work? I am considering it for our next trip as the prices are much cheaper for us, and then with free bags as well it could save us around $300 for the flight and then we won;t have to rent a car either as we would fly into MCO instead.

Love the NO's updates too. Looks beautiful there.

I saw Mary Ellen responded to your process question. I am NOT a fan of SWA at this point just due to the hassle of traveling with children + their crazy boarding process makes it even more difficult with children, IMO. BUT, I think $300 is worth the hassle! Plus Claire is 4 or 5, right? She'll be easier to handle than a 2 year old. (i hope!)

Great picutres of New Orleans! The wedding looked like tons of fun. What a great way to get to the receptions by going down Bourbon St. That must have been a blast! Henry did a great job taking pictures! I guess it is in his genes huh? :goodvibes Thanks for sharing!

I was surprised at how well Henry did with the camera! He now has his own digital camera that he loves to take pictures with. He's really getting the hang of knowing how to point it and line up a shot. It must be in our genes - my nephew is really pretty good at it too! :thumbsup2

Hey BE! I'm so glad to hear things are working out for you guys in NYC. We just got back from out trip to the Twin Cities. It would have been great to have been able to meet you guys, but I know you are where God needs you to be. I couldn't remember where I left off on your TR so I've started over from beginning. And I'm glad I did. I missed the videos the first time around. I think they were on my "come back to" list and I just never made it back to them. Until now. I'm still on day 2, but am slowly catching back up. Loving it all again!

Hey you! Good to see you again! How was good 'ol MN? Did you get some Famous Dave's? They actually have a Famous Dave's here now - on Times Square! We haven't gone yet, but we plan to!

Enjoy the videos! I was thrilled when I saw how many Poppa captured, it really catches some more of the Disney feeling with the sounds.

Henry took some great pics- he's a talented little photographer! :thumbsup2

Love the march to the wedding reception with the jazz band- that looked like so much fun! Do the bride and groom live there?

The Bourbon Street pictures made me laugh- I can just smell the beer and Tide now! Reminds me of Savannah on St Patrick's Day!!

The bride and groom actually live in California! :rotfl: It was a destination wedding for EVERYONE, both sides of the family! The groom's family is mostly from Minnesota and her's is from the west coast. They just love New Orleans, and visit often, so they thought "why not?" Well...the groom thought that, it took some convincing for the bride. She was thrilled that they did it though, they did NOT expect 100 friends and family to RSVP, they thought it was going to be a much smaller wedding, so she got the best of both - family present and in her favorite city!

I take it St. Patrick's Day in Savannah is a big party time? Do they do the Tide trick? It really did work, later that day you couldn't smell the beer at all!

Basically you book a seat. There are no assigned seats. When you check in 24 hours in advance you are giving a letter group - A,B, or C. Then within each letter group you get a number, for example B15. You line up by your number and that's how you board. You can sit where-ever you want once you are on the plane.

I have found boarding to be fairly easy. In the past everyone just picked a seat a sat down. I liked the boarding better when SWA didn't offer business select (which sits you towards the front) and the opportunity to pay $10 for earlier boarding.

In the past the only people that preboarded where people in wheelchairs and families with young kids. This made sense. Now you can have a high A position and still be towards the back of the plane.

I love SWA. Despite their no assigned seat policy I still find them to have great customer service and I love free luggage. Plus I love rebooking for lower prices and knowing that I can change my flight without change fees.

The free luggage thing was a huge bonus! We loved that!

On the return trip I made sure to check in right away and we got the A group, but it didn't really matter because everyone that boarded still in front of us chose their own row, so there was basically one person in each row and we still ended up in the back of the plane with the first row with 3 seats open. I still check their website to see if they have a cheaper flight, but so far they have always been the same price or much more expensive and aren't always direct for us. I would put up with it all again for a good savings/direct flights! :thumbsup2

Brooke -

I love your pictures!!!!!!! That was the coolest wedding ever. I love music and I can't imagine actually having a trumpet play the trumpet voluntary instead of just the organ. Plus being escorted by a live band is just too cool. the buildings are fabulous. All the hotels look lovely. The French Quarter is very cool (of course I can't smell Bourbon street). Really, really fun update. I love seeing other places in people's TRs. Nice job!

And Henry did take some really great pictures! I don't know if that was beginner's luck but way to go Henry!

It was a very, very cool wedding. Jazz music start to end! The band was excellent - and very funny!

Count yourself blessed that you can's smell Bourbon Street! :rotfl:

I'm back from St Louis and all caught up! You've been updating like crazy this past week!

Back to NYE - My first thought when I saw the wait times board at Epcot was "Figment was 45 mins???!!!", then I saw the 4 1/2 hrs for Soarin' :scared1: That's INSANE!!!

I'm so sorry that Joe and Henry didn't make it to the Poly in time to see the fireworks with you  It sounds like getting anywhere that day was a major hassle!

I had to smile at your comment about the way Bourbon Street smells, I thought the same thing when we went there for the Sugar Bowl several years ago. Unlike most people though, I couldn't get past how dirty and smelly it was - that one trip was enough for me, I don't care to ever visit the city again.

The wedding looked beautiful!!!

I want to get the TR DONE, I'm itchin' to start the PTR! I'm hoping to get another update in today!

Weren't the wait times nuts?! 4.5 hours...I wouldn't stand in line that long for any ride!

That smell is HARD to forget. It was nasty. The rest of the time we were there it wasn't as bad, but we avoided Bourbon Street pretty much the rest of the trip. We just took other streets that were much nicer. One thing that bugged me was some of the shops - they weren't family friendly and had their doors WIDE OPEN. At least here in NYC you can't see into those from the street!!

I don't think I'd ever plan a visit there again, but if the opportunity arose for some reason (like another wedding, or something), I would go back and try to do some the various museums and things.

What another great installment... love all the pictures of NOLA... It was a fun trip down memory lane - It was a year ago I was there for the big youth gathering and found out we'll be going back in 2 summers with the kids from church again. The street car, and the hotel, and the sights, sounds, smells... NOLA is very distinct!

And the wedding... wow! What a cool experience! It sounded like it was a fabulous celebration!

That is a great way to put it, it is very distinct! Where do you stay when you guys are down there?

The wedding was fantastic! We all had so much fun!

What an amazing wedding party!!! I can't believe the food and entertainment! NOLA really is such a pretty city with so much history and culture. So different, really, from any other culture in the States!

I think I always have room from pizza too.

Do you think the sidewalk damage was from Katrina? or just that it's generally an old city?

The food was awesome. I tried so many things, I wish I had taken pictures or written down what they were. I know KK asked for a recipe from the chef of a particular dish with grits and shrimp, but he couldn't even give it to her because it was, "a shake of this, then throw in some..." :rotfl:

I think the sidewalk damage is just from being old. I *believe* the French Quarter (at least the area we were in) was unaffected. We were told that a couple times, but it just seemed strange that this entire section of the City wasn't hardly touched and a streetcar ride away we saw some homes that were still gutted and boarded up. Especially since where we were was so close to the waterfront...:confused3

I really enjoyed looking at the pictures from your walking/riding tour of the city! Very pretty and so much history!

That wedding was amazing! All that food looks/sounds wonderful! So glad you were able to go and have fun! :goodvibes

Looking forward to seeing what the next day's plans are!

The City was full of history! I really wish it had been warm enough to do a walking tour with a guide. If we ever go back I am doing that!

Can I just say that I LOVE all the pictures of New Orleans...it can be such a pretty town. And thanks for the additional hotel pictures...those were especially fun to look at for me.

I have a PTR to start but I am making myself finish this first! I'm just itchin' to start the PTR though...so with that - ANOTHER update!

The next morning we were invited to attend a breakfast at a local restaurant with some of Joe's relatives that were attending the wedding that we didn't see too often, and one I'd never met until the night before at the wedding. However, they went bright and early, and Henry wasn't even awake by the time they left, so we opted out.

769402776_jXDEw-M.jpg

They ate here, Johnny's Po-Boys - but had breakfast. Later Joe and I ate here for dinner not realizing it was the same place the family had eaten at until after the trip!

Family

Back at our hotel we ate at the continental breakfast again - hello my cream cheese danish! And eventually walked over to the Astor Crowne to meet up with the rest of the family.

At the hotel we waited in the lobby for a while, KK had just woke up! :rotfl:

Guess what I did while we waited?

If you thought, "Found some coffee." you'd be correct!

Instead of going to McDonald's I thought it would be quicker and easier to just go into the restaurant attached to the hotel and ask for a cup to go.

Well....turns out they weren't technically open yet, but they would help me. But they hadn't brewed the coffee. Okay, no problem - we've got time. But then the guy couldn't find the filters. After they were located the coffee brewed, but there were no lids for the to go cups - and no milk or sugar for adding to the coffee! :rotfl2: After about 20 minutes of waiting for coffee, I finally had a cup. It was quite an ordeal. I thanked the frazzled man and gave him a bit of a tip - I felt so bad for him, what a way to start the morning! While all that fiasco was going on I snapped pictures of the beautiful restaurant.

After coffee was had and KK was downstairs we started out on our trek. Where we were going? I'll walk you there.

And this wasn't our final destination, but become a destination along the way...

759786272_NKNPE-M.jpg

"Central Fire Station"

Henry spotted the open firehouse door and yelled "Da no (firetruck) Mommy!" The incredibly nice firemen outside allowed Henry to sit inside the truck! He had ZERO reaction at the time, but after wards was bubbling over about it.

759785993_Z4yg5-M.jpg

I tried with all my might and Mommy tricks to get him to smile, but NOPE.

759786602_STudT-M.jpg

759786827_w5D2M-M.jpg

You can see the "Fire Dept Shirts Available" sign, we got excited about that and thought it would be the perfect thing for Henry, but they were completely out of toddler sizes.

759787088_Z2s3K-M.jpg

Henry and the incredibly nice fireman.

759787034_jFxhD-M.jpg

Still no smiles, not even a peep. He was completely silent the entire time.

:cloud9:

This is the one thing, other than the wedding obviously, that I cared about!

Because it was chilly there was no outside eating-they had a thick tent over the area. For a moment I was a bit bummed, I always imagined eating beignets and sipping my coffee in the sun....but, it was stinkin' cold, so an inside table would be just fine, thank you! ;) We filed into the tent area and waited in line for a table.

759786710_jRDqp-M.jpg

759786116_yKdyX-M.jpg

A large Cafe Au Late and an order of beignets please!

759786464_vzDfp-M.jpg

The "outside" area.

759786337_oQk8r-M.jpg

I was excited to be here! The sign tells a bit of history about Cafe Du Monde, it's been in the French Market since the 1860's, serving coffee and beignets 24/7.

759786891_6Uxxu-M.jpg

Looking through the door windows into the inside section. The waiters and waitresses were flying around. They have this process DOWN.

759786939_D33EV-M.jpg

They wait in line to fill their orders

After a small wait we were seated at a table near the back wall

759785906_qAQbb-M.jpg

My view, there was a row of windows behind me

We place our orders and just enjoyed being there, warm and in great anticipation of our first taste of beignets!

One very happy lady.

For some NUTTY reason Henry was NOT a fan. However, he did enjoy just eating the powdered sugar. A woman dressed in head to toe black sat next to us...she heard me say "Uh-oh" out loud. I just knew by how into the powdered sugar Henry was, she was gonna get some on her! But, she just laughed and said "I'm here, in all black...it's OKAY!" she was so, so nice and encouraged Henry to get into it all. It was very cute.

Powdered sugar surrounds every single table!

We had such a great time in there, eating, drinking, laughing and getting messy!! I LOVED the beignets! Joe thought they were good, but wasn't as crazy about them as I was.

When we emerged I was on a complete sugar and caffeine high. I remember laughing at everything and talking to Joe a mile a minute. :rotfl:

We decided to take a streetcar into the Garden District to see some of the homes in that area, it was supposed to all be very beautiful. This time some research was done and we knew where to catch the car. :thumbsup2

It was a popular place for runners to be, running down the tracks - toward oncoming cars. They would quickly jump over to the other side of the tracks and keep running past.

As the streetcar went through the neighborhood I didn't get to see much due to my seat...and Henry, who was squirmy and tired. At some point Joe and I decided we would just get off and walk around - the rest of the family stayed on.

The homes in this area were beautiful!

At some point we boarded a streetcar and went back to our hotel for a rest. When we got onto the streetcar the operator asked us, "How about them Saints?" and we had NO clue what he was talking about. We are not sports people and didn't realize the Saints were THISCLOSE to the Superbowl! :rotfl: We didn't even know the Saints were a football team...:rolleyes1

KK and Poppa this day also visited a WWII museum - I didn't get to talk to them much about it, but I know they both enjoyed it! Here are a couple of Poppa's pictures:

769403082_brwTh-M.jpg

769403149_DKjW3-M.jpg

Our hotel came with free wi-fi, so I had been trying to research good restaurants in the area we were in, one called "Country Flame" kept coming up. It was Mexican food (always a hit with everyone in our family), and it was mentioned several times that all the police officers and fire fighters ate here - that is a pretty good sign it's gonna be good. So, that is where we went for dinner!

759786945_QCBid-M.jpg

My standard - chicken fajitas.

759786874_SNW2f-M.jpg

Part of Henry's quesadilla on my plate there too!

759786580_WJYw2-M.jpg

Joe's standard - chimichanga

769403975_FnUnA-M.jpg

It really wasn't anything fancy in there, almost a hole-in-the-wall type place, but it was GOOD! The waitresses all loved on Henry, it was very sweet! :cutie:

And sure enough, like the reviews mentioned, there were several policemen inside and guess what we saw outside?

759786761_bBgo9-M.jpg

He is making his siren noise here, "dano, dano!"

The police officers came outside while we were standing there and said hello to Henry. They got into their car and turned on the lights for him! He was THRILLED!!!! It was a magical moment!

We went to our separate hotels - Grammy, KK and Poppa would fly out the next morning. Joe, Henry and I had one more full day in New Orleans!

Back at the hotel we turned on the TV and found this channel:

759786327_aAwKf-M.jpg

Marching Network TV

759787003_2tiFN-M.jpg

All Band. All Day. All Band. All Night.

No offense to any band geeks out there, but we found this HILARIOUS!

And then we watched it for a little while...:rolleyes1

We were soon off to bed...what would the next day hold for us...we had NO PLANS! We'll see what happens...

We must've been posting at the same time. I have yet to have a beignet, but they look so good!

What afun day. Love the marching netwrok. Who would think they would make such a thing. I would be laughing too. And then watch a bit....:rolleyes1 :rotfl2:

Great update...and I know I am itching for you to start a PTR! :thumbsup2

The pictures were great again. Boy did you get my mouth to start watering looking at the pictures of those beignets.

Looking forward to reading about your last day in NO.

What a fabulous update!

I'm ready for you to start your PTR too. I'm selfish like that. :rotfl2:

While I loved the beignets, I was not crazy about the powdered sugar, there is just waaaaay too much. I felt like it was going all over. Not a fan of that.

I loved all the great pictures of New Orleans. They brought back great memories of when my SIL lived there.

I know you liked the Beignets, but what did you think of the Cafe Au Late?

I am looking forward to your PTR.

Good gravy - what a bunch of great updates!! I love all the pictures and info you posted of your adventures around N.O. Um, "you had me at hello"...at Cafe Monde!! YUM-O!! :worship: I couldn't get over the plateful of powdered sugar that was left behind, too funny! :rotfl2:

I also think it would be cool to visit N.O one day. It's on my long list but it's at least on a list.

I'm sorry your first Southwest experience left a bad taste for you. I was extremely reluctant to try them for the first time on our April trip but I was reassured by so many loyal followers so we braved it. We had a great experience and what I appreciated the most about them is they really have their stuff together and they keep things moving along. I thought about this because clearly they were in a "hurry" to get you out of the aisle and they were hustling. Give them another try one day! :) We were so pleased with the service, being on time and efficient AND not having to pay $130 in extra bag fees that we booked them for our October trip and still have to drive a little over an hour to get the the airport that services them. What's bad is we live like 5 mins from our airport! :rotfl:

Thanks again for all your detailed information and sharing with us.

Heather

Loved the powdered nose pic and the self picture of your shadow on the sidewalk!! You're getting me excited for our adults only trip next year to Nawlins!!

Gotta love all the friendly people that the south is known for!! So glad Henry got a few magical moments !!

Cafe Du Monde is a must must do for us in January!! I've got so much research to do. Do you have any recommendations for good books/websites to check into?!

Can't wait to hear about Joe's Nawlins requirement.... :confused3

I'm sooooooooooooo ready for you to start your PTR too!!! I cheated by about 3 updates and started mine before I finished my last TR. Just couldn't stand it anymore. :lmao: I'll be lookin for ya over on the PTR board!

I'm finally all caught up. Great updates BE! Love all the photos and video clips! I can't wait to hear about your upcoming trip as well!

Love all the pictures of your New Orleans trip. I enjoyed the tour through your great pics.

I love the ones of Henry being so serious in the fire truck and then enjoying himself with the powdered sugar.
