A Sweaty Guys Guide to High Heat and Humidity at DL

I've always had issues dealing with the heat, I'm more of a winter person. Doesn't take much for me to start sweating like crazy on warm days. My family and I recently visited DL over Labor Day week. Temps hit a high of 104 with a max humidity of 68%. What better weather to walk several miles over paved surfaces!

Iv'e read a few comments about dealing with the heat, taking it slow and drinking plenty of water seems to be the general advice. In addition to that, the following tips helped us greatly, some of which we did not figure out until mid-way through the trip.

1) Do not bother with purchasing a cooling fan in the parks. Disney sells a $20 spritzer fan that does not provide a decent breeze nor spray very well. We went through three of them before finally giving up. They are also very large and can be a bit heavy when filled to capacity. Instead, we went to Big 5 on Harbor and purchased a smaller fan that was far more efficient for $10. 2) In addition to wearing hats for cover, purchase cooling towels for you neck. This worked really well, not only did it keep the sun off our necks, but they really stayed cool throughout the day. Wet them in the bathroom periodically, take them off and throw them over your shoulder or on your lap when on air conditioned rides or in restaurants and they cool down even more. I would tuck them into the front of my shirt (looked kinda like an ascot) when riding fast rides. 3) Bring collapsible water bottles. They are easier to fill at the fountains, you can actually bend the top a bit to get the whole thing full unlike a water bottle. Also, as you use them the decrease the bulk carried in your backpack. Amazon link for reference: http://www.amazon.com/Tribe-Flex-Ec...8806&sr=8-2&keywords=collapsible+water+bottle

4) Bring powdered gatorade PACKETS. Look for the gatorade packets not the larger containers. They don't take up much space and can be easily added to the water bottle. After day two of our trip, I started feeling better after using one packet in the morning and one in the afternoon. I purcase them at the grocery store, here is another link for reference: http://www.amazon.com/Gatorade-Perf...08980&sr=8-1&keywords=powder+gatorade+packets

5) Any AC area where you can sit down was packed. I did not realize how coveted (and how few spaces there are) of indoor dining seating there is. We made Blue Bayou reservations ahead of the trip, but I would also recommend Plaza and Carnation Cafe reservations for any meal after noon. Those who stood in line with a reservation were typically seated outside. The Pizza place in Tomorrowland would be a good option as well. Small World and Pirates were great ways to cool off. Unfortunately all dark rides with AC had longer than normal wait times. We were not the only ones with the obvious idea.

6) Certain areas of both park were a bit more humid than others. In DL we tried to avoid Adventureland/Frontier/New Orleans/Critter during the worst heat. All of the water features made it worse. In CA the area near Grizzly was REALLY bad. All those misters on the ride... Cars Land was really nice.

7) Bring extra clothes. We returned to the hotel every day around noon, went back around 4pm. Taking mid-day showers took a toll on the laundry situation. Had to buy soap and was tshirts in the hotel sink for a few days.

That's all I can think of for now. Will add more later if I remember anything.

Thanks for posting the suggestion about the misters! We are going to be at DL 10/4-10/6. I'm going to go get one of those misters before we leave. I have a feeling that it'll be warm when we're there.

Great tips and I agree that parts of the parks seem hotter. Toon Town and DCA always feel 10 degree's hotter to me!

Great tips. Thanks!! I never thought of the cooling towels.

I stopped by City Hall and made a suggestion that they sell the towels in park. They take up less space than the inadequate sprayers, and can probably charge more for the towels. Both Target and Big 5 on Harbor run out of them during heat waves. I was lucky to get the last three at target.

Funny how people see/feel things differently. I think the exact opposite of about the heat in Cars Land and Grizzly Peak even when it is humid. Cars Land is the hottest place in DCA to us. Black top which intensifies the heat and fewer, less mature trees equals sparser shade. Grizzly Peak on the other other hand is the second coolest area to us (after Bugsland.) Lighter asphalt plus many more trees that are much larger and more mature means more shade as well as bit more breeze flowing through.

Yeah, I can see where Cars Land would be less humid, but it's pretty hot there. Maybe the illusion of being in a desert makes it worse, too.

Toontown, though... ugh. It can be 80 outside, and Toontown will feel like it's 100.

We used the Frogg Togg cooling towels and they were pretty awesome! I wish we would have invested in one per person so we didn't have to share! I just folded them and put them in zip lock sandwich bags when we were inside or on a long air conditioned ride. I agree that the mister fans were not the most effective tool... plus I suspect I handled mine too roughly and now the connection between trigger mechanism and blue bottle seems really loose. And leaks... but I really couldn't tell if that was from the joint or the barely sealed opening where the water does go in. I forgot the darn thing in the animation academy and by the time we retrieved it after the next session, it had leaked and flooded their lost and found drawer! Whoops! I almost handed mine off to someone headed in, but I ended up packing it home... One thing that was awesome is that a CM at the Corn dog Castle gave me a cup of ice and said "the ice is for your mister fan, put it in there and the mist will feel a lot better!" I fed my fan the ice, piece by piece, and the 5 minutes spent doing so was totally worth the effort! It really cooled it down so it was truly refreshing again! Although I don't thing being covered in water is the best way to prevent sunburn...! Stay cool out there, Fall is coming!

I agree with Cars Land being hot, w were trying to avoid the humidity more at one point in the trip. Where I live it can reach 115 degrees, I can deal with that. Totally understand the term "It's not the heat, it's the humidity" now...

Oh I got ya there. The humidity has been a killer this year and I like the heat. But the himidity earlier this month - ugh. Props to you for finding solutions!

The solutions were a matter of desperation. Went to Universal on Sunday before Labor Day, I knew we were in trouble. If I could somehow convince my 7 year old to go home on Monday, instead of spending 5 days in that heat/humidity, we would have gone home. Still had the hotel points and tickets were not activated yet, so we could have gone back in November. Oh well, made the most of it!

Thanks for sharing about the collapsible. Bottles, I didn't. Know they made such a thing,. Very interesting. Another cool spot would be in the hyperion theater where Aladdin is. We like to go in here for the show to cool off a bit.

We have one of those Frog Toggs things. I'm going to bring it with us for sure! I also have a neck thingy that I got at REI. It has super absorbent crystals in it and when the breeze is blowing, it makes you feel so much cooler. It's like a cheap evaporative cooler for your neck.

Other things I've found:
  • Moisture-wicking clothes. I have "hiking shorts" (Columbia brand) from REI, plus Champion brand shirts from Target (in the athletic wear section). You can even buy moisture-wicking socks and underwear!
  • Wearing a wide-brimmed visor feels cooler than a hat to me.
  • Keeping a wet washcloth in a ziploc bag. Add ice periodically, and wipe off your face and neck.
  • I really like Kleenex brand "Splash and Go" wipes. Very refreshing, and feel much les sticky than Wet Ones wipes. You can get them in the travel-products section at Target, by the cosmetics section.
  • As the OP mentioned, taking a break mid-day to shower and change clothes can really help.
  • Ask for ice water at any CS restaurant. Much more refreshing than room-temperature water.
  • Even strategies like walking on the shady side of the street can help!
