A Suit and Flip Flops?

I was at the grocery store the other day and was behind a woman in line wearing a black pants suit with black flip flops. Have you seen this before? I was shocked. I usually don't notice what people are wearing, but it was a very long wait and after awhile you start looking around.

Would you be surprised to see such a thing? One contradicts the other to me.

I wouldn't be surprised. Whenever my wife dresses up she always takes a pair of flip-flops (or even slippers!). If she has to run in to a store, or somewhere else, that doesn't require the dress shoes, she'll put on the flip flops. It's just a lot more comfortable, I guess.

When I used to commute to the city, I would keep an extra pair of comfy shoes in my car. After a long day in heels, slipping on a pair of flip flops was heaven! I would bet she did the same thing, forgetting she had to run into the store for a few things.

I hate heels, I have a bad ankle and they kill my back. If I have to dress up I bring my flip flops or comfy slippers to wear when I dont need to wear the the heels ( expecially in the car or if I am running into the store!)

It would not phase me at the grocery store. Then again, I'm also used to seeing people with gym shoes on & business attire. That is usually at the train station but I'm assuming similar concept.

Then again, my DD lives in flip-flops and she would definitely do that.

I commute by train and bus into the city. I keep a pair of dress shoes in my office, but other than that, I wear black sneakers. There are a number of other commuters who do the same thing, particularly with sneakers or flip-flops.

I wore very expensive dress shoes when I was working. I never drove in them (can ruin the back of the shoe) not would I walk from the parking lot in my "good" shoes. Going in the grocery store would not have warranted putting my "real" shoes back on.

A funny anecdote - I was going to the opera in San Francisco one night. I was valet parking and about to hop out of the car when the attendant had to remind me to change my shoes!

I bet she had nicer shoes to change into. Maybe those were her "driving shoes"?

My boyfriend works an hour away from where we live in a place where he has to wear steel toe shoes. He always drives in flip flops and changes into the shoes when he gets there.

I know quite a few professional women who keep flip flops, crocs, or other comfortable slip-ons in their car to wear when running errands before/after work. I'd assume that to be the case if I saw a woman in a business suit and flip flops or crocs.

Me too. She was probably on her way home. I do that too--when I run into the store to grab stuff for dinner or whatever, I may be in business attire & my sneakers.

LOL!!! I had to read the responses to figure out what was so shocking in your original post. I guess we see it so much around here that it didn't even register. I know people who do not even own a pair of closed toe shoes. I've seen flip flops worn with all sorts of attire up to and including prom and wedding dresses. Of course, those have had rhinestones on them, but they were still flip flops no matter how much bling you put on them.

I wear my flip flops or gym shoes to work and change when I get to the office. It always makes me giggle a little when I see people in the grocery store in heels.

Yep, this is me; I go right from my office to the gym; if I have to stop anywhere in between they'll see me in my office clothes and sneeks. I don't wear dress shoes ANY longer than I absolutely have to :thumbsup2

Hey, there are even times I keep the sneakers on in the office! I hate shoes, if I had a choice, I'd be barefoot.

Completely normal here in London, too. (In the summer!) Commuting on public transport, walking everywhere, and high heels do not mix.

I tend to wear ballet flats rather than flip flops but I'll look just like her tomorrow evening, as I have a pedicure on my way home!

When I worked and was wearing dressy shoes that weren't the greatest for walking, I usually kept a pair of flip flops in the car to slip into for running to the grocery store after work, or picking up the kids, etc. on the way home.

I'd assume it was for the same reason you se brides and bridesmaids in flip-flops at the reception- a girl can only take so much!!!:rotfl2:

After a long day in heels I change into my flip flops for running errands before going home. :)
