A Smile in my Heart–Magical Week of Friends,Fun & Freezing-10/28-COMPLETE!

Day 3 - February 9, 2010
Disney Hollywood Studios
Chapter 1
(Otherwise known as the morning I almost divorced my husband!!)

Just kidding of course, but you'll see why in a moment.

We awoke this morning, got ready as usual, and prepared the stroller for our day at DHS! The forecast was iffy today - chance of rain - so Shawn mentioned about taking the rain cover that came with the stroller (we were given a free rain cover since we were a repeat OSR customer). The rain cover was kind of bulky and since we had a couple of blankets stored beneath the stroller (did I mention it was cold) I told him no, we would just bring our poncho and use that if we encountered a quick storm.

We left the Poly and headed to the car to drive over to the Studios. The plan for the day was to spend our day at the Studios with Monica and family and all have dinner together at Sci-Fi!! Woo-hoo! How cute would all the kids be sitting together in a big car at the Sci-Fi, we thought!!

We were ready to endure our TSM rope drop madness morning (did it in 2008 so we knew what we would be dealing with) but this would be Monica and family's first time with TSM!

Here was our plan of attack:

* Get there as early as possible
* Wiggle our way up to the ticket turnstiles
* Send Shawn with all our tickets to get up to the front of the rope
* Kids and I hang back from the craziness and head down Sunset Blvd to meet up with Monica and kids (Dave would be doing the same thing with their tickets)
* We would all meet back at RNRC for the Dads to take the boys on the roller coaster

:woohoo:

First up....we arrived around 8:30 and got up in the shortest line we could find. I think I texted Monica to let her know where we were and then we waited. After a short while, the American Idol folks starting coming by and interviewing people and "warming up the crowd"! They were funny and made the waiting seem to go by quickly.

A few camera phone pics:

(Michael was showing the camera his Star Wars/Mickey Bar shirt we made....he loved it)

Then they let us in and we handed off our tickets to Shawn and split up! I find this a much easier method to do the TSM rush. I have no desire to take my kids and stroller and squeeze my way through the crowd in order to get in the standby line for TSM. It's just not worth it to me. However, rope drop is still necessary in order to get two rides in since we go right back at our first return time (9:50 usually) and get a 2nd one (which by then is pushed WAY out into the afternoon) We tried this same method in Oct of 2008 and it worked fabulously! :cool1: Only one of us has to endure that rope drop craziness!

So at the rope we waited once again and I entertained the girls by letting them take pictures with my camera. Here are a couple of Emily's:

Then Katie took a few. I didn't see them until much later on when I was looking through my pics for the day. They all pretty much looked like this, so I will just post one for you to see.

P2090322.jpg

(Her lovely self-portrait making some kind of weird face....that girl is so funny)

Me and the kids were not close at all to the rope but we did get to see some funny streetmosphere where we were standing. However, here is the view from where Shawn was standing right up against the rope!

655-Disney-02-09-2010.jpg

Kind of scary, no? :scared1: What I find more scary than the crowd is the glare he is getting from the guy in the burgundy shirt right up front. Creepy!!!

The guy in the green is smiling for the camera though!

While we were hanging out for the rope drop, Monica at this point had texted me that her Mom had forgotten her park ticket so she was going to head back to the hotel to get it. Dave had managed to get up closer to the front to do the TSM rush with plans to meet back up at RNRC just like Shawn, but I couldn't find them anywhere in the crowd. No worries though since I knew we would be meeting up with everyone soon!

The rope dropped and off we went!

P2090365.jpg

The kids and I took the right turn to make our way down Sunset and in short order we were standing in front of RNRC waiting for Monica and family to join us.

P2090367.jpg

(A nice empty RNRC area....wonder where all the crowds went???? LOL!)

P2090368.jpg

P2090369.jpg

(Michael's playing air guitar I think)

A few minutes later they were there and all the kids were excited to be back together again! Come to find out, Monica's Mom didn't have to go back to the hotel to get her ticket. She went to Guest Services and they were able to replace it for her!

So we talked for a bit while waiting for the guys to get there.

After about five minutes, Dave showed up, breathing heavy, with 5 TSM fastpasses in hand and ready to go on RNRC. But where was Shawn? He was even closer to the front than Dave. :confused3 :confused3 We waited a bit longer, I walked out unto Sunset to look up to see if I could see him, I took pictures of the kids, I talked to Monica, we dwelled a bit on the fact that it was starting to rain, I walked back to Sunset, back to Monica and kids, and then it dawned on me.

Shawn had gone rogue!!!

Hmmm...a cliff hanger! Well we know he wouldn't be lost.

That crowd picture is too funny! It is amazing the various looks on people's faces - you see some really happy people, and then others - not so much!

I don't have this problem at Disney, but good reminder that in life in general it is always better to be happy!:goodvibes

Can't wait to find out what happened to MIA Shawn!:confused3

:rotfl: Did he go on TSM without you guys?

Great update, I love the pictures the girls took. That crowd picture is one of the reasons we usually don't go at rope drop, no one sees Bill and they either fall on him, run right in front of him, or hit him with a backpack and I am about to give someone a smackdown.

I can't wait to see where Shawn was popcorn::.

What a cliffhanger! Can't wait to hear where Shawn was!

Love Katie's self portraits. :rotfl:

It is funny to see the sour look on almost all those faces at rope drop!

I am predicting that Shawn perhaps rode without you guys thinking what they dont know wont hurt them.. I cant wait to hear what really happen to him?

It's funny that you mention the whole getting lost thing because I actually entertained the idea that perhaps he was! That maybe he got turned around after getting the FPs and couldn't remember how to get back to where RNRC is. Then I thought, did we get our signals crossed and he thought we were meeting HIM at TSM and not HIM meeting us at RNRC?? You start going through every possibility....

Love your statement about just being happy!! It's so true, isn't it? :)

Great updates!! Oh no, a possible divorce and rouge from TSM-aaccckkk

LOL! At least we can (sort of) laugh about it now! ;)

I can imagine Tracy! I did the FP run back in Oct 2008 and it is controlled chaos, but still chaos. That's why I don't bother with trying to bring the kids to ride it standby. I don't want their first experience of the day to be one like that! The rope drop crowd at DHS always looks crazy but I've found that if we can hang back and on the sidewalk a bit and then just leisurely make our way down Sunset it works out well. That is, as long as we have someone to go grab those coveted TSM FPs!!

Katie's self portraits were numerous on this trip! She is a nut!

The guy in green is happy though!! Maybe he is a DISer??

Hmmm.....Amanda....you may be on to something....:rolleyes1

Thanks for joining in Kelly! I have put in links on the first post so you don't have to read through all the chit-chat in between! Hope that helps! :goodvibes Glad to have you here! :)

If he's anything like my DH he jumped on without y'all. We had an incident something like this when we went the week after y'all and I was not a happy camper. I can smile about it now, but not then. We have a picture of me and the girls taken after said incident and my jaw is still clinched.

Same here....can smile now...then...not so much.... :headache:

Day 3 - February 9, 2010
Disney Hollywood Studios
Chapter 2
- ...Insert ominous music here....

Monica and I stood around talking about what might have happened to Shawn. :scratchin

I tried calling him.

No answer.

I emailed him.

No response.

We stood there watching the time on RNRC standby line tick from the nice 5 minute wait that it had been since we got there 10 minutes ago, to 20 minutes, and finally decided to let Dave take both boys on the ride by himself. At that point, I was pretty sure I knew what Shawn had done, but was hoping maybe he just had to make a stop at the bathroom unexpectedly or something. I was still trying to give him the benefit of the doubt. However, the aggravation and total and complete embarrassment was creeping in and I felt the magical feeling slipping away. Here I was, standing around with my friend, who had followed "our" plan of attack for the whole TSM/RNRC combo method and my husband was derailing all of this. :headache: I was really embarrassed, and if I'm being truly honest, I was a little angry.

Monica had some funny things to say that helped me until Shawn finally showed up....smiling....looking a bit smug.....and I informed him (in a nice tone, I'm sure :rolleyes1) that Dave had taken both boys to ride since the wait time had jumped from 5 to 20 minutes. Shawn said, trying to keep things upbeat "Great, that's fine. I'll try to catch up with them."

And off he went.

But it wasn't fine.

I wanted him to be there to ride with Michael. I wanted him to follow the plan. I wanted him to get the FPs and come back and ride the dang rollercoaster with his boy.

What I didn't want him to do was ride Toy Story Mania in the standby line!!!

Yep, as most of you guessed.....that is exactly what he did. Thankfully, he did have the frame of mind to get the fastpasses BEFORE riding, but he still rode. Ok, so what's the big deal, you may ask? Well, it's not that big of a deal except for the fact that it wasn't just OUR plan, it was our friends' plan, and he was holding everyone else up for his own desires. If it had just been us, I wouldn’t have cared that much, but here was Dave, rushing to get the passes to get back to the rest of us to go WITH SHAWN and the boys to ride RNRC. He busted his tail to do it, and now my husband just decided to go off on his own. I just wish he had TOLD ME that that is what he was going to do, so I wouldn't have felt like a dang fool looking for him and making excuses. It was very frustrating for me, and I felt like hiding under a rock.

Ok...rant over. We didn't discuss it any more....what was done was done and I just wanted to get on and enjoy the rest of our day.

If you are wondering (although it still irritates me when I think about it), I am mostly able to laugh about it now.

While the boys were gone, we took a few photopass pics of our girls.

Image0603.jpg

Image0605.jpg

And the not-so-magical shot (the balloons didn't appear in Emily's hand like they were supposed to)
Image0608.jpg

Then Monica and I got in on the pictures!
Image0591.jpg

We posed for a rock-n-roll shot, but it is pretty embarrassing, so I don't think I will post it!

About 15 minutes later, Dave and the boys emerged from the ride and we filled him in on Shawn and told him he had gone in after them to try and catch up. Just then, Shawn came off the ride. He said he had actually made it almost all the way up to them, but was a few groups behind. The boys had a blast!

One last picture around the guitar and then we were off to a certain hotel.....

P2090374.jpg

Riding the Tower of Terror was a first for Megan, Katie, and Emily....oh yeah, and ME!!! Ack! :scared1: I have never needed to ride this since the only one who has ever wanted to ride it before was Michael (and my MIL took him that time). Now, both girls wanted to try it and since I didn’t want them getting scared and not having a parent to be next to them, I agreed to go.

Hold on….wait a minute….you want me to walk into that old abandoned hotel where something awful has clearly happened???? Then you want me to ride an elevator that plunges me to my most certain death???? All in the name of fun??? Are you kidding me???

Oh, ok.

Monica decided to stay with the strollers and the rest of us made our way inside the creepy hotel (with the posted 13 minute wait...ha). We walked right on (it was about 9:30 at this point) and took a couple of pics as we made our way towards the hotel’s library.

P2090375.jpg

P2090376.jpg

P2090377.jpg

We made our way into the creepy library where we learned the mysterious story about what haunts the hotel, and then we made our way towards our doomed elevator.

The boys sat together in the third row right in front of the rest of us, who were put all together in the back row. Dave was next to Megan and Katie, then I was next to Katie on the other side. I believe Peggy (Monica’s Mom) was next to me, then Emily and Shawn. My stomach was in knots but I figured I would try to act calm since I had to for my little girl.

I had no idea that the ride had other stuff to it other than the dropping so I was pleasantly surprised at the beginning! The ride is very cool!

Then we dropped!

Then we went up!!

Yowzers….serious air time….I really had no idea I would come out of my seat like that. I looked at Katie every time we plunged and she looked petrified so I just laughed (even though I was petrified too) to try and ease her anxiety.

When the ride was over, I looked at her and she looked really scared, and then…..

she gave it two enthusiastic thumbs up!

Emily also loved it! Shawn took some video using the night vision setting and it’s so funny to watch Emily’s hair flying up and down each time!

Megan, unfortunately, gave it two thumbs down. Poor thing. I think that may have been her first and last time on it! She didn’t look shaken up or anything…I just don't think it was her cup of tea!

Once was certainly enough for me though. I would ride it again on another trip (or even just another day if we spent more than one day at DHS), but there is no way I could ride it numerous times in a day like some people do.

With our FP return time (9:50) just about up for Toy Story Midway Mania, that is where we were headed to next!

P2090381.jpg

P2090406.jpg

P2090382.jpg

(I was really hoping to finally be able to go into One Man’s Dream on this trip….do we???)

P2090392.jpg

(Cue the music….we’re here…..)

Before hopping on for our first ride on TSM, we hopped in the FP distribution line to get our 2nd set of fastpasses for later. Here was the return time:

P2090394.jpg

This was just before 10:00, so we were eligible to get another FP for something else at noon. Again, this method worked out great for us for getting two rides on TSM without getting crunched in the rope drop craziness!

This parade was going on as we were getting ready to go in.

Here we go…

Getting ready to board! Katie rode with Shawn, Emily rode with me, and Michael rode with Hunter!

UP next.....hint hint.....(not so subtle huh?)

I missed the whole "Where in the World is Shawn?" post....but honestly I never would have guessed that one! LOL! Sorry....not funny then, but I'm glad you can laugh now!

Yay for you for riding TOT! I have to admit I'm one of "those" people who can ride it over and over in the same day! LOVE IT! :woohoo:

The shots of the girls in the TSM glasses are adorable! And tell Michael I love his Star Wars Mickey bar t-shirt....way too cool! :thumbsup2

OMG!!! I can't believe Shawn did that! It is a little bit of this  and this:headache:, and a lot of this:laughing:

Hmmmm.....maybe there is one bright side about my DH not being a total Disney nut...there is no chance whatsoever that he would go riding solo in the Parks without us.:rotfl:

I admire you, Missy, for being one of those that can ride that crazy ride over and over again! Once per day is just fine with me (truth be told once a year would do just fine...)

Yeah, at the time I was not amused at Shawn's rebellion! He's lucky I love him!

A LOT more of this one :headache::headache::headache: than the other two!

Sara

How did I know he did that. I woulda been super mad. But at least now it looks like your day gotten better after the whole TSM fiasco

Yes, the day was better after that! It's hard to be in bad mood at Disney for too long!! :goodvibes

Sara

Oh my! Can't believe Shawn did that without letting you know! Funny now I guess, but then, not so much!

Love all the pictures of the girls and you & Monica outside of RnRC. You should have posted the rockin' out one! I could do it..... :rolleyes1

How did the boys ride? Michael and Hunter together and Dave by himself?

I'm impressed all the kids did ToT! (you too!) Sam rode it once a couple of years ago and HATED it! She hasn't wanted to give it another try until recently, she told me she might try it again. She'll ride any rollercoaster, but that drop just freaked her out I guess. Poor Megan!

Looking forward to more.

Tower of Terror is my favorite ride! I love to loose my stomach, of course I wish the ride would keep it once I got off. Your girls are very brave to ride it. Danielle rode it for the first time when she was 4. The ride itself was okay but the pre-show still scares her a little. I'm glad you rode it with them for your first time too. I think that ride was just what you needed to get over the earlier drama. I'm still feeling for you cause I've been there too. I won't get to that update for a while since I'm still on our arrival day.

Can I guess what you're doing next? Would it be a visit with Dug?
