A slap in the face from the boss

I am so upset with my employer. I was asked to work over the weekend at an event at a hotel. Although it was my anniversary weekend, I agreed to do it because I was told I would be well compensated and it would help my business. I do normally work on comission and I did not know the pay going into this but I was assured I would be well compensated. Well, I just worked from 11:00 to 6 friday, saturday and sunday I was paid $300.00. I also had to work friday night striaght from the evnt until 11:30 pm and sunday night until 9:30. The least amount of money I have ever been paid was $25.00 an hour with this compnay. I am very upset about this. Should I let the boss know how upset I am?

First of all, I'm sorry for what happened to you. It probably feels like a sucker punch. Second, let this be a learning opportunity get a solid figure per hour, in writing prior to an event.

I'd say something to the boss. I would at the very least let him know that well compensated to you meant more than you normally make per hour. You gave up a weekend and you should have probably been paid time and 1/2 for those hours. Or shift diff or something. Does your company have a policy on that? I would probably request that the pay be increased for that time period and have a specific amount. Tell him the formula you used. Regular time + shift diff or overtime. I'd have that in writing (save a copy for yourself). And I would wait for a reply.

The whole thing stinks.

Looks like you got great advice, I just wanted to say I am sorry that this happened, it certainly is very unfair. I hope if you do speak with the boss that this is resolved. :grouphug:

I am so upset I don't even know what to say. I am payed strictly on comission, so no hourly rate, really. I do home parties and if we do a party that is a flop we still get paid $25.oo for our time. I was sent an email informing of me of my pay. I am almost in tears. But I don't want my family to see me crying over this:sad1:

I'd be upset too. How long do the parties last? Divide the $25 by the party time to get a base and go from there.

I agree..

Considering the number of hours you worked, in my mind that is not "well compensated" at all!

Did you receive a hotel room? Meals included? :confused3

The parties are 2 hours long. We get $50.00 if our comission is below $50. I have only had that happen once. I average about $300 per party so this was shcoking for me.

Were you selling items? And if so, should you get a commission from any sales?

It is shocking! I would make the request, but I would also be looking for something else. It sounds very underhanded. I wouldn't want to be put in any other situations where he could get work from me for so little, like that again. And I'd tell him as much too. But I wouldn't tell him I was looking for something else. Don't tell him until you give him your notice.

The hardest thing is that this is a really great paying job. I don't sell anything I actually buy gold and I get a comission on what I buy. I make alot of money. I know I could not go out and find another job making this much money. I just don't know what to say in an email to him. Can anyone help me with what to say?

WHO said you would be well compensated? Was it your boss?

Yes, I was told that the least amount anyone has ever been paid for a hotel buy is $500. We did 3 hotels in my city and I had the most buys by far. The company did NOT have to put me up in a room but one of the workers was. I am just upset beyond words.

So were you paid on commission? Is so - is this his fault?

I know everyone else says you should confront the boss but unless you got the information up front as to what you would be paid - I think you learned a lesson here to make sure you know what your compensation will be ahead of time.

You need to ask yourself - What will confronting him accomplish? Sometimes there is more value in impressing the boss than monetary pay.

No commission for this buy. I wish, I would have made waaay more money. I kept asking what the pay would be and I was told it depends on how we do. But, I assured that it if was a flop I would be paid well. It was not my idea to do this buy. I was just told I had to work it.

I wouldn't be so fast to draw my own conclusions, or call this "a slap in the face from my boss." You may have more compensation coming -- and, if you complain, you might not get it, but $10.00 an hour really doesn't sound that shabby to me. I would not be so rash. I'd wait it out to see if your commission is paid separately, and if not, next time get your wage in writing, as "well compensated" is relative.

I definately learned from this. I did try to find out the pay but it was a wait and see how we do deal. $10 an hour is low when your used to being paid $100 to $200 an hour. I was mislead when I was told the least Iwould make would be $500 for the weekend. I was very busy, worked really hard. There be will no more compensation. I am sure of that.

I would definitley wait two days and see how you feel.

In your first post you said you were asked to work and agreed. But in this post you said that you HAD to work it. You are emotional about this and it is always best to wait until you can be more objective before confronting a boss.

I agree that you should wait until you can talk about it without getting upset or angry. Then, how about simply asking your boss "How did you calculate what I was paid?" Then at least, you can see where he/she is coming from.
Then you have to ask yourself how much you want to rock the boat. That will tell you if you want to persue this issue or just rack it up to experience.

I would let it go. Then, should he ask you to work another weekend, like the last, that would be the time to mention compensation. You like your job, it usually pays well, so you don't want to jeopardize it. Maybe your boss believes $100/day is fair compensation (rather than a slap in the face).

:)

How much do you want to keep the job?

The way things are right now if I had a normally well paying job I wanted to keep I wouldn't be rocking the boat. I'm sure they could hire someone else pretty easy right now. So I would take a deep breath and see if this is worth making a fuss over. And would you be better off letting this go in the long run.
