To all of those single parents or solo parents that have asked in the past... I can now give a first hand trip report as a single parent.
In a word.... FANTASTIC!!!!!! My DS (6 and AKA "man cub") absolutely LOVED the clubs and the "independence" he felt in being able to eat on his own (with the club mates of course) and deciding which activities HE wanted to do. So, here's the attempt at my first report.
Day 1 - we were picked up at 9:20 a.m. at All Star Movies by Tiffany's and once again, they were prompt. The driver this time, however, disappointed me a bit by not allowing a stop to get a bottle of water. He stated it was "all freeway" - which of course he must have thought I was blind when we passed the FOURTH gas station or 7-11 just OFF the freeway. However, I digress.
For two of us, you might ask.... why spend $210 on a town car when Disney can get you there for less than $120? Can you spell C-O-N-T-R-O-L freak? Hello, my name is Kimmielee and yes, I'm a control freak. I couldn't stand paying close to $3K (yes, I booked late and no, that didn't include air) for this cruise and not being on the ship as soon as humanly possible!!!
So, as we are traveling in this luxury town car... my man cub says "Mommy, my throat hurts" which is man cub speak for... "I have to throw up!". Oh my, not now... not here.... oh... too late. "Excuse me, Mr. Driver that wouldn't stop to get a water... can we stop now so my DS doesn't continue to PUKE all over the both of us? Yeah, thanks..."
It turned out ok as we stopped by the side of the road for him to empty his stomach and may I stop at this time to give kudos to the inventor of those handy wet wipes that came in ever so handy?
Man cub gets very excited at the "sight" of the ship after the first bridge and now is bouncing in the back seat. I kept praying... "please tell me he puked it all so nothing is bouncing in that belly!"
Finally, we arrive at the Port and after settling with Mr. Driver, using my handy coupon in the back of my Passporter to knock off $15 extra bucks... and a tip for his TIME but it was much less than it would have been had he stopped for a bottle of water!!! (Note: he picked us up 10 minutes ahead of schedule so it couldn't have been a time crunch issue.)
Greeted by WONDERful, cheery people as we made our way inside (with a boarding card with #2 on it) and walked right up to the check-in counter at 10:40 a.m. Not one person waiting in front of me... Can you spell H-A-P-P-Y?
Walk from there to the Registration area for the clubs to get man cub's ID bracelet and my pager. I had pre-registered him, so it was a breeze.
Sat on a comfy chair, watching cool cartoons and took pictures of man cub with Captain Mickey... what a WONDERful start to our day. By 11:45 a.m., they called all Group 1's and 2's to board!!
I've read about it, I've dreamed about it, I've talked about it for months and months... but NOTHING compares to walking onto the ship for the very first time and hearing them announce us and clap like they really are excited for us to sail!!! Everything was even better than I expected. The decor, the attention to detail, the staff, the room, the verandah (can you spell S-P-O-I-L-E-D?) and almost every other passenger that we came in contact with.... was TOP NOTCH.
Thanks to everyone that has ever posted their hints - because I paid close attention to those posts... I knew to have our suits in our carryon bag. I knew to head to the Mickey Pool first. Man cub was the 3rd child in the pool!!! It was literally theirs for their own enjoyment for the next hour and a half. Of course, after that.... well.... it was !!!
I missed our DIS meet (so sorry fellow DISer's), because we got so wrapped up in the pool, then our room was done, then we went exploring and before I knew it we had to do the DRILL! May I say, MUCH less painful and boring than the drill on Carnival and we were lucky enough to be in Animator's Palate, sitting and in the air conditioning!! Yeah!
We then made our way up to the Sail Away party and WOW - how fun!!! Man cub was right up front, dancing away... he apparently has been going to Arthur Murray Studios because he knows the cha-cha-slide.... I DON'T even know that dance!! He was excited being so close to the characters and I made my way up to Deck 10 to take some pics.
Then came dinner - and this is truly the ONLY complaint (ok, there is one more on Day 4, so I just lied). I can't imagine that I was the ONLY single/solo parent on board with early seating (6:00). We were seated at a table for 4 and the first night, our tablemates didn't show... I didn't find out until the third night that we were seated with a lovely couple celebrating their 24th wedding anniversay and had requested a table for two OR a table with NO KIDS. Yeah.... remind me to tell you on Day 3 about Man cub throwing something into Mr. Anniversary's plate... not pretty. Couldn't we have been placed with a family at least? One that understands or REMEMBERS that 6 year olds are not always the perfect dining partners, especially for such a LONG dinner?
So, after Dinner, we go to check out the club and INSTANT warm and fuzzies from the Oceaneer's Club staff. What an amazing group of caring individuals they were! Man cub barely tells me bye... and off he goes. I did see him once more during the cruise... for dinner... once... on Day 3. Other than that, I was ......... can you spell ... A-L-O-N-E? Or my spelling of the word... H-E-A-V-E-N ? I kid you... I did see him a little more than that... but not much. That first night I went to get him at 11:00 p.m., thinking he'd be half asleep but instead, he was wired, happy to be there and reluctant (ok, there was some bribing involved) to leave.
Day 2 to follow soon!!! Don't get too excited, we didn't get off the ship.. it will be shorter than Day 1 because I was... in .... H-E-A-V-E-N!! Only a 24/7 single parent can appreciate reading 3 books in 4 days....
