A reminder who started the FE magic

Newbie question... why is lime green associated with DIS boards?
Early on (sometime before 2003) the DISboards color was green, from what I've been able to garner. So lime green was adopted as the color to wear to identify yourself to other DISboarders. Home Depot had a paint line that (for a while) the paint chip samples were Mickey head shaped, and Alien Green became the color. And many Home Depot stores found they couldn't keep those chips in stock.

You have for many many years been able to choose a colour scheme on these forums, I choose in 2005 the DCL skin on the servers, two plus back. It was not green.

neat, had no idea about the paint chip green thing... do DISers still ID as such on cruises now? Would be neat to have a magnet displayed or something

Yeah, many still do. Often if there is a cruise meet group they will have a way to identify other members of the group. For our WBPC in 2015 we had lime green Mickey heads with our names printed on them, which we hung from our lanyards. It was great to see so many lime green Mickeys around the ship and we got lots of comments from people, asking if it was an exclusive club or something.

Sadly, that doesn't work anymore. As I said, on our recent cruise there were several people (that I talked to) who had no idea what I was talking about when I approached them after spotting their lime-green mickey head in their lanyard and asking who they were on the the boards.

I was told by one of them that they were on another site and that's the identifier that their group organizer sent to everyone to use.

It looked like this one:

It worked well for us. Many of us were from the DISboards group, just as many from the FB group but essentially the LGMH was used as intended, to identify like-minded people who were part of the same 'group' of travellers.

I'm happy that I have been able to educate a couple as to the original creator. Disney Fantasy, I have zero problems with the posting guidelines here. It makes me laugh at those that get upset over them. If a person can't follow a few rules then they have issues not the disboard. I've been posting since 2001 and it's not difficult or hard to understand. Sorry to argue but people do in fact hide behind fake names on FB. I'm not saying that the DIS has exclusive rights to the FE BUT give credit where credit is due. A particular person on FB refuses to do so. I truly think she wants her "followers" to believe that she is the woman behind it. To me it's almost like today's social media version of plagerism.

I got curious and joined a high member count fe fb group and looked into the "about" section on an external web page the pinned post links to.

Debbie is mentioned in that post as the originator there

Edit:

"I’M CURIOUS, HOW DID THIS FISH EXTENDER IDEA GET STARTED?

The idea was the brainstorm of a woman named Debbie For the first Magical sailing through the Panama Canal back in 2005. Debbie thought it would be a fun way for others to exchange gifts. Apparently a lot of people agreed with her!"

I know which one that is. I got in trouble a few months ago when I brought up this site. Man, her husband jumped all over my case. Wow, just wow.

I guess it's OK for someone mentioning DISboards on another site to be jumped on. But not OK to jump on someone here on DISboards for mentioning other sites. Two sets of rules.

Why on earth would they (those OTHER people) use lime green.....
I Know the color spectrum is extremely limited and all, but what would be their purpose in choosing the same color? There is no real benefit (monetary or other) in "stealing" a DISboard identifier, so..............?
No wonder I'm getting old and crotchety...

Perhaps they aren't event aware? People on this board seem to think dis boards is the be all end all. I've met plenty a Disney person who has never been on or even heard of it. Even if they had, doesn't mean it would be on enough to know that disboards had called dibs on line green Mickey heads.

I remember on a specialty cruise. It was either the PC, Maiden Voyage or Hawaii cruise that the Cruise director called out for all DISer's to stand up and be heard. They didn't mention any other groups.

and of all the colors in the wide wide world of sports, you believe that they picked lime green as a coincidence? possible but not probable, imnsho.
i mean, its not a big deal to me but these things keep my feeble old mind whirring well into the night

I just wanted to share my observation as a "newbie"-

The Dis has been a wealth of knowledge to me!!! We are going on our first DCL cruise this year and I want to know everything and anything! I have plenty of friends who have done DCL, but I'm an over planner/everything must be perfect person by nature, so I'm expanding my research beyond friends and family.

I've created threads here, I've jumped on threads here, and some I just click "watch" so I can save the info for later. I've read/received a lot of great info!!

That being said, our cruise meet thread here is basically non existent. A FE for my cruise on disboards- is actually nonexistent. But we have several fe groups of 20 and 2 of 10 elsewhere. I also joined a FE page on that social media site and haven't commented but love looking at the photos and getting ideas.

I use both sites to my advantage. On different social media I can connect on a more personal level, some of us are even having our kids become pen pals before the cruise! It is also nice to see actual people (photos etc) and have one place where it is just everyone "in the same boat". I ask far more questions on here than over there though.

Point being- I think both are wonderful!!

Just out of curiosity I clicked on the "files" section of the FB FE Page that I am on. It has the exact quote that @st0nehedge posted, as well as several mentions of disboards with links to here.

jiminyC_fan you would probably be happy with that :)

I'm in the same boat ;) and have learned so much here, and just discovered the other sites group.

I'm guessing some while ago there must have been quite a feud that continues today, seeing how we aren't "allowed" to mention the opposite site on each.... Whatever it was, people are very obviously still bitter about it!
