They (the announcers) are speculating that he may have been hit in the throat with a puck. It is apparently Jiri Fischer. The announcers said that the emergency crew were doing CPR on him. No official announcement yet. Say some prayers, fans. :guilty:

The Hall of Fame's doors will remain shut to Pete Rose, who won't appear on the baseball writers' ballot in his final year of eligibility.
Commissioner Bud Selig will not rule on Rose's application for reinstatement before the 2006 ballot is released Nov. 29, according to Bob DuPuy, baseball's chief operating officer.

Thoughts?

I think MB accidently posted this here instead of on another thread.

I'm sorry about the player. I hope he'll be alright.

Well I thought maybe there was some connection that I just wasn't seeing. I tend to miss those things pretty eaisily!

My husband is a big Red Wings fan. He was watching it when it happened. I hope he is okay.

Has there been an update - It just says that he was taken to the hospital!

Last I heard he was breathing on his own when he left for the hospital.

This happened to a member of the Montreal Canadiens a few years ago they had to do an emergency trach right there to get him breathing again. It is a scary thing but I am sure he will be fine.

yep a seizure, how fritghtening! I was watching it too Ive never seen a game called after something like that :(

Poor guy I hope he is ok.

Those poor Wings looked terrified! The way they were pounding on the boards like that :(

The whole thing is surreal. My oldest son and I went to our first Red Wings game on Saturday.

USA Today has a Free Press photo that really hit it home: Fischer Down

I hope he makes a full recovery and can return to action soon. However, given his history it wouldn't surprise me if he will require the implantation of an automatic defibulator after this episode.

On the TSN website tonight they had a report that he wasn't so much worried about the heart anomoly but more about wether he could still play hockey. Here is the report I read.

''I wasn't scared about the abnormality,'' Fischer said. ''But I was scared about not playing hockey again. That was a shock for me.''

I just talked to a friend of mine that was at the game. His wife is in the medical profession and she said that an implanted defibulator for Fischer is almost "a given" outcome. As for his future on the ice, I seem to recall that people with this enlarged heart conditions are at risk for this type of episode at any time and I don't think that physical activity automatically increases risk. For example, after his condition was detected several years ago he passed a stress test. There's a 1 PM press conference today and we'll see if there are any updates.

I hope he is OK. You Michigan people love your Red Wings.

I have a small story. Me and my husband were at Mackinac Island the day after Labor Day. We were bike riding. We stopped on the East Side and about 3 older couples in their 60's stopped and started talking to us. We found out they were from Detroit. We explained we were from WI and we were visiting our dd in Marquette. They got on the subject why the UP wasn't part of WI and how it is part of MI. Then they asked us about the Packers and how the UP all loves the Packers and not the Lions.

Then I chimed in, and said, "but don't mess with their "Detroit Red Wings" they are all devoted fans up there, thru and thru. One of the older gentlemen, turns to me and starts laughing, he shows me his "Red Wings" hat. He said, "you got that right".

You have that right... One of the things that struck me at "The Joe" on Saturday how decked out the crowd was in team regalia. I've never seen such a high percentage of a crowd sporting dressed in such a manner at a either the college or professional level. If you go on eBay and look at their hockey memorabilia listings you'll see that the number of Red Wings items listed outpace the next "most popular" teams by about 2 to 1!

My husband sits and keeps the remote down for only two things. Hockey and Lost.

We, too, were watching last night (as always...we are big Wings fans). Since we didn't really know what happened or, at the time, exactly who was down it was quite scary. And, like someone else posted, the faces of the Wings told the gravity of the situation. As well as seeing Jiri's fiance Avery come onto the ice and go to him...that had me tearing up, the fear she must have felt.

I was *very* impressed with the Wings, with Fox Sports Detroit and with the NHL in their handling of this. The commentators were sincere and respectful...the coach & players gave interviews where they were professional and sincere after a *very* trying time...and the NHL did, I think, the right thing to reschedule the game.

And, having been at the Joe for Red Wings games, I could NOT believe how quiet it was...the Joe is the craziest, MOST fun place to be, but it's VERY loud and the fans can be, ummm, "wild" is probably the best word. I was moved by the respect the fans showed.
