A question for those whose kids take daily meds

Youngest DS, age 11 1/2, takes Zyrtec tablets and uses a Pulmicort inhaler for asthma. I dispense these daily. Two weeks ago, DS went for summer visitation with his dad, who also has asthma. I sent DS's medication and Sunday when he came home over half the tablets were still in the bottle! I asked DS about it and he said he forgot to take them! Evidently his dad just handed the bottles over to him to take them himself. Am I wrong to think that you don't just hand a bottle of pills over to an 11 1/2 year old to take when he's suppose to?

I have a 13 yr old dd and I yet hand her the bottle and tell her to take them herself as she usually either forgets (she's ADHD) or she just doesn't take them. She's in a stage where she doesn't want to take them just because and we had a long hard talk about a week ago as to why she needs to take them and what effects it can have on her body if she doesn't keep taking them regularly - if she only takes them when she wants to. I have also had that problem with my ex before and I finally said that I will not have her returned to me in the condition she had been returned and may then start giving her to them in the condition I receive her back in - and trust me it's not a pleasant condition!

DD4.5 has elilepsy and has to take meds daily. She is too young for me to hand the bottle to, but she resists because of the bitter taste. For the record it tastes like Robitussin cough syrup which I do not like, so I cannot blame DD for resisting. Eventually, she will be able to switch to a pill, but she can't swallow them yet.

To answer the OPs question, that would depend on the kid.

My 17 year old son is on Prilosec for severe acid reflux and we still remind him every night to take it. He goes to college in the fall and we plan to call or e-mail him every night to remind him. He is good about taking the Prilosec but it gives us peace of mind to know he took it.

My daughter is 8 years old and takes a Zantac pill every night before bed. She does it completely on her own, I never have to remind her. I think she has too many bad memories of being up for hours with a stomachache in the middle of the night (this was before we started her on Zantac).

I don't even bother asking her anymore if she has taken her meds, she does it automatically after brushing her teeth.

Now, as to whether she washes her face every morning....that's another story!!

Our daughter is 14, and we usually just tell her which ones to take and how many. But, since her surgery in April, I've been making sure to give them to her, just in case. While she had an appliance on her head we didn't need or want any seizures because she forgot to take her meds!

I saw something on the news about this flavoring this man invented to put with the medication. I think it was on the Today show on Fathers Day. His dd had cerebal palsy I think and was talking meds for seizures as well. He worked in a pharmacy and the mom keep begging for him to do something and he did.
Just thought I would pass this along to you.
