A question for NYC Residents: Is This Too Far to Walk?

We have tickets to see Disney's Tarzan at the Richard Rogers Theater (46th St.) on Sunday. We'll be arriving via Amtrak train to Penn Station. Is it the 13+ blocks a reasonable walking distance for 2 middle-age parents and their 2 teenagers? And if so, would going straight up 8th Ave. be the best (and safest) route to take?

Or would we be better off getting a cab? In that case, what kind of fare would you expect to pay?

Lastly, do you have any dining recommendations for the theater district? DH and the kids are not very adventurous, but anything Italian would probably be good.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I just did this 3 weeks ago--it isn't a long walk. It's very doable. I'd walk on 7th Avenue, that's nicer than 8th.

Enjoy! It's a great show. :thumbsup2

And I forgot to add my restaurant recommendations:
1. Virgil's on 44th (off 7th)--BBQ.
2. Carmine's (also on 44th off 7th, but the other direction)--family style Italian.

Very nice walk - but don't go on 8th Avenue! Walk up 7th or Broadway.

I would recommend Tony's Di Napoli - 147 W. 43rd Street - between Broadway and 6th (very close to Broadway). Excellent italian food - just like Carmine's but a newer restaurant and SLIGHTLY less noisy!! The number for reservations is 212/221-0100 (we always have our office Christmas parties there!)

I completly agree - you are fine if yu walk up 7th...

As for Food:

"And I forgot to add my restaurant recommendations:
1. Virgil's on 44th (off 7th)--BBQ.
2. Carmine's (also on 44th off 7th, but the other direction)--family style Italian."

TOTALLY AGREE - YUM!!!

Walk up 7th Avenue.

anothe r choice...John's on 44th Street. best brick over pizza in the city.

Not a bad walk at all...I have done it with my daughter at 4 years old or the past 2 years and she has no trouble (and she is a whiner!) so I would think that you would be fine doing it....I also second Carmine's to eat! But with teenagers they may prefer the Hard Rock Cafe or something along that line...

We've done it twice in the last few years. The walk is payment for the fine dinner we eat when we visit New York City to see a show. :)

We do it all the time. Totaly do-able...Have fun and if you want great italian food, Carmine's is the place to go.

I completely concur with the previous posters, just wanted to also post that since you said your kids aren't adventureous if you'd prefer a chain they may know already there's an Olive Garden and I believe a TGI Fridays right in Times Square. Personally I'd venture into one of the previous recommendations too but I have a 13 year old myself and if she doesn't know the place she can be 'iffy' and since NY isn't cheap, I hate to have a wasted dinner.

The walk is easy and I also recommend Carmines!! It's one of the guilty pleasures that I don't tell my food snob friends that I enjoy. The food is served family style, so 2 dishes will easily feed the whole gang, and it really is out of this world...and, if you like garlic bread, oh, man...try it there! Have fun!

The walk is no problem. I agree with everyone else-walk up 7th Ave. Carmines is great but will probably be packed, I know I had reservations and still waited for over an hour.

As you can see, EVERYONE goes to Carmines! :teeth:

That is why I recommended Tony's - the food is even better!

I'll be there on Sunday, too! We're coming in by bus (Port Authority) building-we're taking my 13 year old stepdaughter to see Wicked. Have fun!!!!
I haven't eaten at any of the restaurants mentioned although I had heard that all of them are good. We always eat at the same deli (Broadway Deli) where they pile the lunchmeat really high! (Like I need that.....)

Oh boy, if you like deli you should try Ben's Kosher Deli on 38th street right off 7th Avenue. The pastrami is to die for!!! piled high, served with homemade cole slaw and pickles!!!
