A question for Mother's of Boys

Wow!!!! This thread flabbergasts me.....I have two boys and I would kill them if they peed outside. I don't find it cute or funny - seems pretty disrespectful and lazy to me.

Now that being said - hiking in the woods with no bathrooms anywhere is completely different. Otherwise just seems silly.

Jenny :)

I completely agree with Jenny. I have two sons also and they know that that type of activity is only for times when there is a complete lack of restrooms (camping, etc.) I don't even like that, really, but I do want them to enjoy the outdoors, so it comes with the territory.

Frankly, in the OPs situation, I would not go on walks with that woman anymore. I just wouldn't be able to take the boy doing that EVERY time! He has learned that it is "fun" and Mommy will let him, so he is going to ask (and be allowed) to do it on every walk, whether he has to go or not. I just could not watch that every time.

Also, to the woman whose husband actually sings a song about how great it is to be a boy, when he and his sons have just relieved themselves by the side of the road and she is desperate for a bathroom---I wouldn't tolerate that either. In fact, my Dh would be at risk of losing the equipment that allows him that convenience if he ever did that to me!

On road trips, on the side of the exit, as far back as we can go, usually to a fence. If we were on a walk in the woods or on my parents' land, or a country road with no cars coming, yes.

In a neighborhood..........never.

On the side of a city road........never.

I find a place to take him in, in those cases.

How far away from home do you walk?

:rolleyes1 Yes, DS has done it in the past. BUT ONLY in a situation where no bathroom was available...except once. We stopped at a gas station when he was just about 4 because he really had to go. The guy said he would give us the key to the bathroom only if we made a purchase. Well I bought a drink and he said "No, a GAS purchase of at least $5" His prices were really high and I said no. Nick went on the grass outside of his building! I admit not the right thing to do, I let pure anger take over my good judgement. Nick was crying becuase he didn't want to pee his pants and this young guy was being a total jerk. I have matured now and would probably not let him do that again, but I was younger and not as level headed.

The funny thing is I would never let my girls go and squat behind a tree. They hold it until we get home or have an accident. I remember a family that was in line to ride the Soaring ride in Epcot. The line was really long. We all had probably waited 45 minutes at this point. The little boy in the family tells the mom he has to go to the bathroom. She hands him a water bottle and tells him to pee in it. The women in front of them tells the mom,"He better not pee in that bottle." The lady starts yelling back saying that he has to go. The lady tells her to get out of line and take him. Everyone in line was just amazed.

Some people are just unreal.

My son has never peed outside and that's not something I'll be teaching him anytime soon.

Are there really camping places that don't have restrooms? We grew up going camping a lot and there was always a restroom. I'm taking DS camping next weekend and there is a restroom. Even if it's far away, he's still walking to it rather than peeing outside.

:thumbsup2 If ever a person deserved it, that jerk did!

That reminds me of when we went to one of my 12yo's baseball games last weekend. We went to the field and then figured out that the restroom was locked. I needed to go, so my DH, 6yo and I all went to a nearby CVS drugstore (the only business that we saw) and asked to use the restroom. The man was going to say "no", but then saw our 6yo and told us that only people with kids are allowed to use the restroom. He walked us over to the locked door where the restrooms were located and I was holding my breathe, hoping that Jake wouldn't say, "but I don't need to go". Thankfully he kept quiet and we used the restroom. :rotfl:

If it had of just been my 6yo who needed to go we would have brought him into the woods which were near the field.

You are kidding, aren't you! I love my husband with all my heart. I am thrilled that they have some things easier. Being a gal was pretty great about the time I felt the first movements of our babies. Not exactly resentment material. He has the sweetest kind gentle heart in this world, as well as a sense of humor. And luckily, so do I. I can't imagine being such an angry individual that you would react as you have stated.

Only in a real "I can't hold it anymore" emergency. Have used Snapple bottles (how handy they are) in traffic jams, for example. It's a real lame bonus of having boys, that you're able to do this. But, no, I don't let them wizz willy-nilly all over the neighborhood. Of course, they are 10 and 13 now, so who knows? I hope not!

I also have a smapple bottle in my car at all times. My oldest plays alot of baseball and at times there are not facilites or they are really gross. So the little ones go in the bottle.

I would never let him go outside on someones lawn or in public.

My son doesn't pee anywhere other than a bathroom. I can't even imagine letting him whip it out in the car to pee in a bottle. Gross!

He and my husband do go camping and I don't know what goes on there.

Can girls hold it longer? I just don't get all these emergencies. I never had to go on the side of a road,in bushes,or in the woods. I guess that is why we never camped. We stayed at a hotel. The point being in my 40 years I never had to pull off the road to pee. In the 21 years I have had my daughter she never peed anywhere except a bathroom. Is this just luck? I just don't get it. Maybe it's a boy thing?

It's not a boy thing. My son has never not been able to hold it until we got to a bathroom. We've been on roadtrips, long airplane rides, been at events that the bathroom isn't always convenient and he has never had an accident since he was potty trained. Maybe I'm just lucky but I think peeing outside in public is disgusting.

I agree that peeing on someones house is disgusting. Or peeing somewhere just because a person doesn't want to look for a restroom. But what are the baseball players supposed to do on my son's team? They often play somewhere were there are no restroom facilities and to get there would meaning driving somewhere. And not a close drive all the time, either. On Sundays they play 2 double headers, so we're talking 5-6 hours of baseball. If they are not able to go into the woods and pee, what are they supposed to do? Obviously not drive and find a restroom--there is a game going on.

I do agree about the whilly-nilly whizzing described in the original post, but there are times that peeing outside is the only practical thing.

I seriously think you need to talk to whoever runs the park district, schools or where ever the kids are playing and have them add port-a-potties or something for the kids to use. Every ball field around me has port-a-potties during soccer and baseball season.

Just watching the original "Cheaper By the Dozen", and at one point they stop the car and all of the children bound out and into the woods! I hooted!

I think the ball teams should make sure there are facilities for the kids. You can't blame kids when there aren't any around! Now, hiking in the "great outdoors" is a different story.

Nah, happened once with my daughter as well, where we had to pull over.

The wanting to pee outside, I think that is a boy thing. Not every boy, of course, but mine did, he was about 2 1/2 when he was in that stage where I'd catch him peeing off the deck(or the slide @@) or whatever and I'd have to hustle him inside.
He's 4 now and is fine, but at that potty training age it is not something I'd be uptight about. What's a little pee on the backyard grass in the grand scheme of things?

I forgot about the baseball thing. There were times when my boys had practice and the facilities weren't unlocked for various reasons. One of the old fields just had a port-a-potty and sometimes practice would start before they had been delivered. Also before our new park places to practice were hard to come by and sometimes there just wasn't any place to go. Also for the person who had never been camping without bathrooms sometimes the guys camp, hunt , fish in real woods where no one came along and made a nice restroom. It's ruffing it I couldn't do it but apparently real outdoorsman don't mind. My boss camps and hunts in Colorado and New Mexico and it's just wilderness. I'm surprised at the boys who apparently haven't went outside.

They are probably not camping at a campground. We usually pack our stuff into the woods, find a spot we like and pitch a tent. No bathrooms, but no people or noise, either. It's the best way to camp, IMO! :teeth:

I only have girls, but we all have peed outside camping and on long hikes. When my dd was 5, there was no bathroom at her soccer practice, and the nearest one was 15 minutes away. My dd never had to do it, but some of the girls would overestimate their ability to hold it till the end of practice, then end up having to go behind a tree. Another soccer field where they play games has no bathrooms, but the nearest Walgreen's will let us use theirs, and it takes only 3-5 minutes to get there, so no peeing in the trees there.

I have no problem with kids of either sex peeing outside in emergency situations, into grass, dirt or bushes, out of the view of others. That would not include in one's own neighborhood or against the wall of someone else's house. :scared:

The only other time I can recall allowing DS to pee outside was when we were waiting for one of the WDW busses at one of the parks (can't remember which one). DS had just finished potty training and couldn't hold it. There were no restrooms anywhere near the bus stops. DS certainly would have wet himself if we had tried to go back to the park to find a restroom. So, we had DS pee into a bush (away from anyone else) while DH stood behind him to give him some privacy. (Yes, I know this is a flaming offense. But given the option of allowing DS to wet himself, it was the best choice available.)
No flames here! When the option is an accident, I'm sure most people would prefer he pee into a bush than leave a puddle on the bus seat.

My son has always used a toilet. For those times when I knew it would be a while before finding a bathroom, I would force him to go to the bathroom before we left the house or public place that had a bathroom.

Hmmm, I think this friend better start teaching her boy that is NOT acceptable to pee on people's houses, or he might find himself in jail when he gets older.
