My sister has a one child. When she was born she had alot of hair on her head. More than normal. She is three now and has double the hair of anyone her age. She also has hair on her back, nuckles, and even above her lip. It is light but you can see she will be very hairy. My question is when she was four months old my sister noticed hair in her private area. Not alot but it was noticeable. It is a soft hair but my sister was very upset by it. She went to the doctor who referred her to an endocrinologist. They did blood testing and said she looked fine. Now she went for her three year check up and the doctor noticed more hair growth. He thinks everything is fine but he wants her to go back to the other doctor to follow up on it. He said in all his years of practicing he has only seen about three kids with this. She is Italian. They say it is more common in children from European countries. She is also half Irish. I told my sister I would put this question out to see if anyone else has had this problem. She knows everything will be fine but she still worries. Her growth is fine. No other changes have happened.

I have three daughters and they are 1/2 Mexican (and 1/2 Irish, German, Bohemian and probably 2-3 other things too ;) ). The first is as blonde as can be, blue eyes, etc. The middle has light brown hair and hazel eyes. The youngest has black hair, brown eyes and hair almost everywhere -- on her upper lip, back, legs. The hair on her head is also very thick. The others have relatively thin hair on their heads and very fine hair on their legs.

As long as she's healthy, I'd tell your sister not to worry. I realize that's hard to do especially with the way the second doctor reacted, but I think that's the best way to deal with this.

Thanks for responding!

I think it's probably just fine and due to her being Italian. I'm Italian and have soooo much hair. It's so thick and I also have always had very hairy arms and legs and hair on my upper lip, lower back and stomach. I got picked on by the guys a lot when I was young, but it's all normal in my family. My mom has it, my grandma, etc. I don't know about the pubic hair, but I don't think that it's that. I think that she just has hair all over, including there and it's probably nothign to worry about.

The endocrinologist can check her blood again. I believe they are checking her estrogen levels. There are incidents where young girls have too much estrogen in their body and start premature puberty. Breast development and hair in those places are signs. There are medications children like this can take to stop puberty from progressing, and then they are taken off the meds when they are old enough to allow the process to happen naturally.

My daughter had some slight breast growth at 2 years old, due to an estrogen cream her doctor prescribed for a ******l issue she was having. They weren't sure if the cream was the culprit, so we saw an endocrinologist for this kind of testing. At first, her levels were high. Then she was re-checked a few weeks later and they had returned to normal (we had stopped using the cream). Slowly, her breasts returned to normal and she has been fine since.

It was a scary time - but it all worked out. I hope the same happens for your family!
